Which of these games is your favorite?

The news about Nintendo remastering 3D Mario games inspired me to create a tournament to decide which of Mario's platformers is CE's favorite. But there's a small obstacle: there are 18 Mario platformers, which is an awkward number to base a tournament around.

The solution I've come up with is three groups of six games each, which I've tried to balance as best I can. The groups are as follows:

A
Super Mario 64
Super Mario 3D Land
New Super Mario Bros. U
Super Mario Land
Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels

B
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Odyssey
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. 2

C
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario 3D World
New Super Mario Bros. 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Land 2

Today you will be voting on Group A. The top 2 games will advance to the next round.

I figure SMW and 64 will run away with this vote, but 3D Land is underrated af

Out of curiosity what do people see in the NSMB series?

To me they all blended together in one game, felt uninspired and bland, had obnoxious music and you ended up seriously burnt out after playing two of them. I think out of all of them I liked NSMBU because I liked how the Overworld as a throw back to SMW. I can't remember a single level in the NSMB series.

I only played NSMBU which I think ended up being the best way to play that game heh.

I didn't grow up with the NES/SNES games, but I think playing them now the NSMB games have a good amount of polish and some solid level design with the way they hide their secrets. Also I think wall-jumping is really fun, though those games don't require you to do a lot of it.

yeah to be honest I never grew up with any old school Mario either. I actually played NSMB first before I played SM3 or SMW. But after playing SM3 and SMW those games stick out in my head for some reason. Testament to how good those games were designed.

Super Mario 64. Helped me learn how to read and is the first game I ever beat by myself. Nothing will ever top that.

I only played the DS and Wii ones but the Wii one felt like a solid continuation of the old games and the multiplayer was terrific

the DS one felt pretty bland to me though
