Still holds up to this day despite what anyone thinks.

My favourite aspect of classic Tomb Raider is how non hand holdy it is. It requires complete precision and player must control all inputs that really pulls you into the dangerous world and makes every second of every moment involving and intense.

I think alot of modern realistic platformers neglect this. Think Uncharted, Tomb Raider 2013, Assassin's Creed.... To platform it requires nothing from the player. You just hold up and the game does everything for you.

In Tomb Raider, you got to assess the distance, line yourself up, perform a running jump/or standard jump, hold the grab button in midair and pull yourself up.

It's such an atmospheric game that oozes with tension and it really immerses you into the world of Lara Croft. Absolutely love the first 3 Tomb Raider games. And the old graphics just make it creepier.

Hopefully if they do a reboot they bring back the peril and danger of the actual platforming. Doesn't have to be tank controls is just has to bring the focus on tense, actual platforming that makes you think rather than just being about shooting shit, pointless collectibles and cinematic setpieces.

I played Tomb Raider quite late (about 2012) and I never had an issue with the controls. The games are designed with the controls so it works perfectly as intended. I get someone wouldn't like the slow approach but like I say it brings the player into the world more due to the precise and methodical approach and it requires attention.
I think it aged fine. Tank controls take 5 minutes to get used to. Up makes your character go forward and back backs them up. I never understood why people think it's rocket science and impossible.
I admit what didn't age fine was the combat. Combat isn't a deal when you're shooting a bear but when they give enemies guns it really falls apart. That's why Tomb Raider 2 is my least favourite because of how many shootouts are required. And the camera really doesn't perform well in these circumstances.

Sounds absolutely miserable. Like trying to play QWOP and having to control the individual muscles in the dude's legs instead of focusing on the objective and letting the dude's muscle memory take care of itself like an actual trained athlete should.

I played 3, and it was one of the most dreadful experiences of my gaming life. Game was straight-up trash and I have no desire to ever touch anything associated with that IP again as long as I live. Hell, some of you guys probably remember my topic on CE where I just continually raged page after page about how absolutely terrible that turd of a game was.

If 1 is anything like that crap, it should seriously replace all those ET cartridges in the desert.

Maaaayte it sounds like you just suck dick at the game.
Tomb Raider 3 is fantastic. Exploring the densely packed jungle of India was a great intro. Exploration and atmosphere was at it's peak in this game in my opinion. Going through the jungle and this music starts playing....

Adding on to my last post I'm surprised she didn't have an attack where she would lunge herself at enemies and impale them on her tits.

Speaking of India, that part in the very first level where I pulled the switch and literally got rolled over by a boulder out of nowhere was the exact moment I knew the game was going to be total garbage, and yet it pulled crap that was for more BS, in basically every level.

It doesn't come out of no where it comes from a mile away and gives you plenty of time to get out of the way.

Tc you're probably talking to a bunch of pre 2000 born sjw brainwashed kids.

As a 90s kid I can understand what you're saying. The fact that you have to jump, grab and pull yourself up makes making those jumps quite satisfying.

I've been meaning to try out the remake. Anniversary, I think it was called?

In any case, I really like the recent prequel trilogy and am making my way through Shadow for the first time ATM. Also picked up the definitive edition of Rise yesterday.

I didn't like Shadow of the Tomb Raider much. Kinda boring, buggy, story sucks, they give you this skill tree and weapon upgrade system and then there's borderline no combat so what was the point? That Paititi place is a piece of shit and the most miserable experience I've had this gen of games. Littered with stupid, boring, pointless, mundane quests and it trying to get 100% completion there takes like 50% of the game. God. And to make matters worse, I got 99% or some shit and the game bugged out in that area meaning I couldn't complete one quest in Paititi because the game is a sorry sack of shit that shouldn't exist. Fuck Shadow of the Turd Raider.
But I liked the optional tombs. They were ok.

Anniversary is definitely worth playing. It's up with REmake in terms of how a remake should be. Pays complete respect to the original while adding new things.

I didn't play the first one too much as it was an earlier PS title and we had N64 and saved up for a Playstation later (by that time there were some good games starting to trickle out).

I did play the hell out of Tomb Raider 2 though.

My problem with the Crystal Dynamics Trilogy on PS2 and stuff was that the controls and camera were highly finnicky and lead to deaths all the time because certain actions just never register. Like jumping at a ledge for Lara to for some reason just not react and grab the ledge or jump fucking at 45 degree angle from where you wanted her to land just to die is shit.
Say what you what about "muh bad controls" in the original. When you fucked up the platforming that was your fault. When you die in Anniversary sometimes it's just because the camera and mechanics shit the bed.

Love the early TR games. I think people forget that, even with tank controls, Lara can do a lot of side jumps and a 180-degree roll, so this is a lot more wieldy than, say, Resident Evil games. But, yes, the non-handholdiness is one of the best things about it. Can't get your timing down? Enjoy falling into the water, or to your death, or into the spike pit. Need to save? Hope you "saved" up some save crystals instead of wasting them.

The sparse soundtrack is one of the best things, too. It seems almost silly nowadays, when we have veteran composers throwing music in every corner, but just exploring a cave with no sounds but your footfalls, guns, growls, etc. really contributes to the immersion. Of course, when you're walking around and hear something dangerous -- like the "something's coming" prompt or a rolling boulder sound -- it's a nice, vivid reminder.

TR1 is probably my fave entry from back then, but I rather enjoyed some of the others, especially Last Revelation. Might be a bit overlong, but the interconnected levels were amazingly fun and infuriatingly confusing in equal parts.
