If you're saying we've infected 4% after wave 2, R is still 96% of R0 in wave 3. Since R0 is definitely above 1.04, you still get exponential growth.

Again. Because the infected population already provided social distancing itself by having non-carriers / less density. It slows the growth naturally. It isn't going to exponential grow at the same rate of a sparse location versus a dense one. You have removed density. You also will have more preparation with testing, beds, ventilators, etc so that you get overwhelmed at a much higher number than you initially did the first wave as well.

The flaw in this thinking is in claiming that everyone is going to die if we stay under quarantine. The reality is you're mild inconvenience will be a pain to live with for a few months, and then everything will slowly go back to normal. If we can do that to save 200k people, seems like a no brainer to me on both a moral and logical scale

Imagine your flattened curve on the graph. Now imagine in wave 2 the growth is slower but you also have to flatten less to stay under hospital overwhelm capacity. It draws it out significantly.
