Youd think companies would be jumping at the gun to mass produce PPEs, business 101 supply and demand no need to even price gouge. We are a stupid species

Agreed. Also seems like all the donations for PPE going to the hospitals. It is good that they get help but there are other essential professions not getting protection like warehouse workers, delivery people, garbage collectors, food bank workers, and those who run mass transit. Those people probably at the bottom of the help list though sucks for them.

I see "should avoid" not "can't go". The stores will still be open and available and I guarantee people will be going out.

https://www.vox.com/2020/4/3/21207310/coronavirus-new-york-hospitals-andrew-cuomo?
Right now, New Yorks hospitals are no longer operating as independent facilities. Under the plan announced this week by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, there is effectively one big New York state hospital system fighting off the coronavirus.

As one VoxCare reader who works in health insurance put it to me, This verges on the socializing of the entire system. To be clear, they were being descriptive, not pejorative and while that is a little hyperbolic, its not as far off as you might think.

Cuomo announced that he had met with New York hospital leaders and come up with a plan to, in effect, merge them into one operating system with many different locations. From Buffalo to NYC, hospitals will be sharing staff, patients, and supplies for the foreseeable future, with Albany overseeing the distribution of resources.

Its not unusual for a time of an emergency for regulatory authorities to basically say, Hospitals, you must do this. Usually there are provisions in state law that enable that to happen, Susan Dentzer, a senior policy fellow at Duke Universitys Margolis Center for Health Policy, told me. Hurricane Katrina is one recent example she gave.

But the plan is still remarkable. There are about 200 hospitals in New York state, totaling 53,000 beds before Cuomo told them to double their capacity. About 20,000 of those beds are in New York City.

It is a matter of necessity, as New York has already seen more than 100,000 Covid-19 cases and 1,500 deaths with the peak still projected to be a week away, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluations estimates, requiring as many as 100,000 beds.

This is on a scale that has not happened in the United States ever, with the possible exception of 1918, Dentzer said of the New York strategy. Nothing on this scale has ever happened in at least 100 years.

I asked Peter Viccellio, associate chief medical officer at the Stony Brook emergency department in Long Island, about the New York hospitals plan. I want to share his response in full:

Were in an almost apocalyptic crisis, which requires cutting through the bullshit. If hospital A has resources and hospital B doesnt, its in the best interest of the patient that hospital A and B work together. Protective equipment should be available to all health care providers, not just those who work at a place with a better procurement officer. We ALL need the proper equipment to treat the patient, and adequate space. Fighting against each other for resources this isnt the time. Resources need to be distributed in a rational way. The current rugby scrum is nonsense.

The top priority in Cuomos plan is moving staff from less affected hospitals to those buckling under a surge of Covid-19 cases. Doctors and nurses from upstate hospitals will be transferred to NYC facilities. Likewise, hospitals will try to send patients from overcrowded hospitals to those with available beds. Ventilators, which support critical patients breathing, could also be shuffled between hospitals based on need.
...
This kind of coordination is relatively commonplace within a single hospital system that has multiple facilities. Whats unique here is the scale: an entire state merging all of its hospital systems into one.

And that will present plenty of challenges both logistical (what happens when patients move from an in-network hospital to an out-of-network one?) and personal (are patients going to be moved far away from their families?). A few more questions, via the Kaiser Family Foundations Larry Levitt: What are the payment rates and who is paying? Do hospitals have to pay each other when one sends another resources?

I do think its going to be incredibly messy and complicated to sort out reimbursement of all this on the back end, he said.

Another one: Is Congress going to provide more funding to bail out hospitals in New York and elsewhere, which have taken a brutal financial hit as they cancel elective surgeries to free up more beds and staff to battle Covid-19?

Well need answers to those questions. But the time for radical action is here. As Joynt Maddox put it, If not now, when?

This is the kind of organization we need in a pandemic, with very clear guardrails around the scenarios under which its put into place and under which it no longer applies, she said. I can see plenty of potential problems, but plenty of upside too.

He was talking about NY with the apex. Not US as a whole. Also he had a great analogy relating fighting coronavirus to fighting a fire.

If you see a fire coming to your neighborhood, you send the firefighters to the fire. If the house next door is burning, you help to put it out before it reaches your house.

His press conferences are so much better than Trump's. He includes graphs. Give you the numbers about what NY needs and what they are doing.

I'm in the US, as well, so I know stuff feels weird, right now. But I'm seeing people say that this is actually the "end of the world", not just that it feels like it. Like, most of us will catch this and get wiped out, the US is going to fall and die as a nation, society and the life we knew are gone and never coming back, etc. Again, I don't know enough to know if there's truth to all of that, or if it's just "doomsday pushers" making baseless noise.

I dont know what to do. I'm at work and my work is having us monitor our temp and report cough, sore throat, chest pain, aches, and similar symptoms to a hot line.

I have a sore throat that keeps getting worse and I keep coughing. I'm trying not to overreact but I also want to be responsible. I dont want to be sent home for 2 weeks. I also dont want people to think I'm making it up.

How bad are early symptoms? Is it ever really mild? I've had diharea for like 10 days as well which I'm pretty sure is due to a stomach ulcer but I dont know. I feel so overwhelmed and I just dont know what to do. I feel out of character and I think it's likely anxiety from everything going on.

It's not about the paycheck. I'm the only one on my team that knows how to do some of my weekly responsibilities. The main important role that would be messed up is ordering meds. I work in a group home for adults with disabilities. I'm also the only one with an account to order med supplies. I'd be screwing over the whole team, and my boss would definitely hold it against me instead of being frustrated by the virus itself.

I have PTO and I can afford to miss work for a bit if necessary. I worry about having a job to come back to.

The cough freaks my girlfriend out and she thinks I should get tested, but seeing as I don't really leave the house during these times, that test would be put to better use for someone who really needs it. If it people in same household it is a bit more accepted than a group playing contact sports. Since parent with kids go home to one house with the infection. Those playing football would spread in to several homes. I'd report them if I were you. Hopefully the cops just give them a warning rather than have them spend time in a jail which kinda a breeding ground in several states.
