The same reason everyone would be estatic if their doctor told them they have a 98% chance they will be fine. It's how they're presented that really manipulates how a person thinks about a given situation. Social media, and the news really makes us believe we live in a tiny box, which makes the situation even worse with anxiety, and panic with big headlines, and mentioning the worst possible outcomes. Basically we get hit with the Woody Allen from Alice syndrome.

They see the number 2 and they know it's a small number but they don't do the math to see how many people that could potentially be, so they assume it's no big deal. If 20% of the US population were to get this, and 2% of them died, that's around 150,0000 deaths.

Applying a 2% mortality rate to the US population equals ~6 million will die.

it doesn't work like that. If you're 20-something, then your mortality rate is like 0.2%, while if you're old, it's more like 4-8%. It just averages out to 2%

I mean I mainly wouldn't do that because the upside of 98 %"Got to eat some skittles" isn't worth the 2% downside of dying.

I might feel differently if it were "If you eat this bag of Skittles you get $10m" and also thought that I had an edge that circumvented part of that 2% risk.

What is the alternative to eating the skittles? The issue for many is the 100% chance of surviving comes with not really living for an unknown period of time. Tell most people to stay in their homes, no dating, minimal friend and family contact, and the cancellation of a lot of the fun you had been looking forward to, and a lot of people would eat a skittle and leave. A risk yes, but preferable to just surviving to survive.

I won't dispute what is going on now, but people like you are letting fear get control of you, and it leaves me wondering if this can ever be over because it will never be perfectly safe.

Because any excuse to downplay the need for responsibility is ammunition in their fight. They don't care if 0.2 or 1 or 5 or 10 percent or people die; those are just numbers and they're not real to them. What's real is that they might have to do something, or change their lifestyle, and this is unacceptable.
