I think Gore had to lose that election to become the man that he was meant to be. In another timeline, Gore won and never learned to care about global warming. He then went on to increase the use of fossil fuels until the earth became an uninhabitable wasteland.

You could argue that lead to Obama, which got the racists panties in a bunch...which opened the door to a mother fucker like Trump...

Man, that's an inflection point so far back, it's hard to plot out how things would change.
VP Joe Lieberman basically dooms us in '08, regardless of whatever else is going on. But what does Gore even do with a Republican Congress. How do Republicans respond if 9/11 happens with a Democrat in office?
It would be better though, because it's hard to see Gore getting us into Iraq. Probably McCain gets the Republican nomination in '04: he would look really good if Bush II lost. He might even win: Gore would probably be a slightly weaker incumbent than OTL Bush, if only due to fatigue from having a Democrat in office for 12 years.

See I think it's pretty easy to see that happening. Gore talked on the campaign trail about wanting to remove Saddam from power, and his comments during the build-up to Iraq seemed more tactical (he thought we should've done more to build a coalition before going in) than substantively opposing war outright. God knows that he would have faced a lot of pressure to deal with the matter from Republicans both after 9/11 and heading into 2004's election.

Maybe that version of the Iraq War would've gone better, though.
