How do you consider it?

Title. I consider it free to take as long as no one's using the cart.

I've never seen such a thing. Where i come from carts are free to use, but I suppose whoever returned the cart should get the quarter and if someone left it there they're probably just trying to be nice for the next person

iv'e only seen that at airports. a deposit for shopping carts is dumb, stores around here just have wheels lock if it goes to far.

Free for taking, although I'll leave it for the next person, just like when I unload at my car, I'll usually hand my cart to someone going in, rather than trundle it all the way back to the cart corral.

That, forgetful or just not worried about a quarter.

Anyways id take it. Ideally id be cool with the employees having it but I'm sure the next person to come along would just take it themselves.

Think that's more a west coast or california thing. Heard of it but never seen it myself. Supposedly incentive for shoppers to return the carts as it gives you the quarter back when you return it. Heard some homless people return carts of those not worried enough about the quarter to do so.

Your wallet, purse, house, and vehicle are not abandoned in the middle of the parking lot because you're too lazy to return them to the corral and reclaim your quarter.

Or maybe not pure laziness, maybe figuring that someone will appreciate not having to drop a quarter for the cart, a small, relatively miniscule, kindness.

Free for the taking. That is literally the point. Stores that use this system don't have to employee a person to return carts, as generally speaking the original customer will want there quarter back, or if not, the next shopper will be interested in a free quarter and return the cart. It's an incentive for someone, anyone to return the cart.

My local Shoppers Drug Mart requires a loonie (dollar coin) to borrow their carts. Everywhere else requires a quarter.

I never need a full shopping cart worth of stuff from Shoppers Drug Mart so it doesn't affect me. I fully support it either way, laziness needs to have a price.

Pretty much. In theory, an employee who took it upon themselves to return the carts could therefore be entitled to the money, but I'm guessing most places with this system require employees to give the money to the store.

The cart is the property of the business , not the customer.

TC's statement is his OP , was that since noone was using it , it was okay to take it.

I am questioning the OP , since neither the quarter or the cart is TC's , would TC feel the same way about his belongings ?

If TC loses his wallet in a public place , would he prefer that it was returned to him intact or would he just shrug it off if as finders keepers if any cash or cards were gone once somebody returned the wallett?

The quarter unlocks the cart for use. When someone is finished using the cart, it's available for use by someone else. The quarter is to encourage you to return the cart to the corral to get your quarter back. The cart belongs to the store. The quarter belongs to the original user, who kindly left it for the next person's use.

Its to stop people from stealing the cart/incentive to return it because we use dollars here for them.

Irrelevant. The trolly isn't the thing being taken. Someones left cash is. Although these days folk use tokens so no cash to be left sadly. I definitely used to take the pound coins left as a kid.

If TC loses his wallet in a public place , would he prefer that it was returned to him intact or would he just shrug it off if as finders keepers if any cash or cards were gone once somebody returned the wallett?

Honestly I'd be surprised to get anything back that I've lost. Still it's more or less impossible to track down someone who left a pound coin in a trolly and return it so your point is moot.

Discount grocery stores like Aldi's and Saver's don't hire cart pushers, so carts get left in the parking lot, the quarter is an incentive to return the cart to the corral.

Nah, there's a guy who goes to the corrals and brings them to the storefront. I'm sure he collects what's left. For me I grew up thinking a quarter is one more game so I still look for them out of habit. Ha.

Anyone who tosses change into a jar knows it adds up. Like with my quarters I have a coin box that's heavier than a car battery. Gotta be a couple hundred worth. Not as if it took effort.
