Lol collectibles.

Play the game as if it were your alternate reality life. You win some. You lose some. You find some. You miss some. Live with the consequences or git gud.

If you ever find yourself not enjoying a game, perhaps you should stop playing it. Or start playing it with a more positive mindset.

I'd rather they make a totally original story set in the prime of the wild west, but I'd be cool with playing as a hardened, less annoying Jack in a game set in the 20's which would be a mix of RDR and GTA. Jack could start out as a small town bank robber like John Dillinger or Bonnie and Clyde then eventually get to the big city based off Chicago and get involved in the Irish gang vs Italian gang war.

I've been replaying RDR2 and am well past Guarma, but I did rush through it a bit cause I never cared for it.

R* isnt too good at collectibles. Most of the time, theyre basically impossible to complete without a map because they blend in so seamlessly to the environment, and because the hiding spots are completely indistinguishable from any other purposeless detail in the world. Their open worlds are breathtaking and magnificently detailed, but hiding things in a cool little crack or cave you designed only really works when every inch of the map isnt littered with little nooks and crannies of the exact same level of detail. For collectibles to work, there need to be subtle tells about where to find them; a suspect spot on your map, a little cave or structure that stands out in its detail, etc. R*s detail is awe-inspiring, but doesnt always mesh well with some of the more videogamey aspects of their games.

hanging shit that blends into a tree in a game with fucking hundreds of thousands of identical trees is fucked up bro

I gotta give it to the folks at Rockstar, they succeeded in making me hate Dutch more than pretty much any other fictional character.

Which is what they were going for and a testament to the strength of the writing in the game, definitely, but still.

I was pretty shocked they actually managed to live up to the legacy they built up RDR1. I couldn't really imagine a way the mystery wouldn't be ruined by a backstory, but I guess that's why I'm an engineer and not a writer lol

While I cant imagine theres a huge creative spark to do a third game, with how neatly this all wraps up, I hope we get something detailing the glory days right up to the Blackwater incident. Playing as Dutch and building up the gang could be a compelling story.

or single player dlc for Sadie between the end of Ch. 6 and the epilogue

The weakest point in the first game (which remains my favorite video game of all time) was how little development any of the Van Der Linde gang villains got (as well as some of the other criminal elements early on). This game did a superb job finally contextualizing what happened in RDR, minor continuity errors aside. Dutch is a bastard, Bills an idiot, Javier turns rotten.

It also causes a slight disconnect, though, with how detailed these characters become vs how small potatoes and self-contained just about everything in the first game was. Ultimately I still think its better for it, but because of the nature of videogames still growing as a medium, there is that slight inconsistency, and playing them chronologically might feel a little off.

Eh, in terms of keeping the spirit of the western I think giving the old gang little context works. They are enemies, and their interactions were destined to be short. And I personally believe the writers managed to say a lot with what little screen time they got. RDR1 is brief and poignant, where RDR2 is indulgent with depth.

The biggest disconnect is the fact that Arthur is never mentioned in RDR1, which isn't that big of a deal really. That's the nature of prequels, and they had a better explanation that the Kingdom Hearts games at least (they forgot until a Data Namine told them through a hacked digitized Jiminy's Journal after Data Sora cleared the bugs).

Likely using the notoriety he got from just being a Van der Linde. And all the great gang leaders are dead or crazy, I think, so idiot criminals will follow what's left.

That's what I was thinking. I'm sure most of the outlaws in that area have heard of the infamous Van der Linde gang who took out Leviticus Cornwall, Angelo Bronte, and a whole bunch of lawmen and Pinkertons and didn't know that Bill was just the dumb muscle. And Bill could handle himself even if he was dumb. With how awful his gang was (the wanton rapes and murders) it's hard to see Bill as just a big dummy in RDR2.

I think they let his competence show in that one mission where he plans a robbery that actually goes well. It's one of the missions where things don't actually go balls up. I can see that guy being a gang leader, even if he's not a great one.

Oh yeah that's right. And he didn't get a whole lot of credit either. Now that I think about it his idiocy may have been exaggerated by the rest of the gang because they didn't see his potential. Plus there's a line he says that may be a big clue about it. Something like "When I make a mistake I get called an idiot, but when one of you does it it's just one of them things."

The whole final chapter is just full of remarkable, heart-wrenching character development. I dont think any game has ever made me as deeply sympathetic to a character as I became to Arthur. Up to that point it was already clear he was a good and even personable and gentle (outside of active crime) man at heart, regardless of his willingness to embrace it, but watching him come to terms with who he is and try to reconcile that with the life he lived was incredibly touching.

also only major complaint with the writing is the somewhat severe tonal disconnect between the main story and the side content. The main story feels weighty, gritty, and real, while much of the side content, even when its more serious, takes on that haha south park is cool right guys? feeling most of GTA V had. I cant quite place it, but its a problem the first game never had even when the storyline you were following was some wacky shit; it all still felt like part if the same world, whereas here sometimes it feels like theres the canon content, and just for fun stuff.

The most immediate example I can think of is the stranger mission outside Rhodes with the really bad HAHA GET IT GUYS? joke, but also in general a lot of it feels just a bit more cartoony

I suppose some of it can also be chalked up to the approach taken to this content where its not as strictly tied to the themes of the main narrative; in RDR1, basically every stranger mission was either a hopeless person clinging desperately onto some long-dead idea, or directly related to Johns redemption arc. Here it gets a bit more loose as just small stories.
