HArd is not fun imo. I think Normal is the perfect difficulty setting because it requires you to think and strategize. HArd mode just makes the action and command based hybrid annoying as hell.

I wish they didn't restrict Classic mode to just easy setting, not everyone is into real-time action, but if you want it to not be a cakewalk, you have to adapt to the new battle system

Not sure if anyone in this topic is a newcomer to the game, but would it be obvious they padded the game out or does it actually feel cohesive?

I would say fleshed out more than padded out. Most of the additions to the story add depth and world building. I've been enjoying the side quests in the slums

As a newcomer it's still obviously padded. If not only because there are entire sections you can choose to skip if you don't want to do the side missions. It's all very engaging though, not at all typical RPG padding. The extra mainline story bits though... not totally sure what was there originally or not tbh, it all seems important and cohesive (with a few exceptions).

There are a lot of things that were not in the original game that are much more in depth in the remake.

I quite enjoy that aspect of the game. I dont want to spoil anything by giving examples though.

A whole lot of nothing happens in the middle of the game anyway they could totally cut it down to 3 games

Have the 2nd game be the rest of disk 1 and at the 3rd game be all of disk 2 and 3

I kind of think itll be 4 parts myself.

1 is up through midgar

2 is up through ancient city

3 is up through crater or maybe through junon

and 4 is the rest up to final battle.

1 episode a year, 3 total would be ideal. I don't know if I can keep my enthusiasm for another 2 years, but any more than that will def not be possible. This isn't Better Call Saul.

I thought I had the battle system relatively figured out. But some battles in chapter 8 proved to me that that's not quite the case.

Took me 3 tries to beat Shiva. Her whipping around the battlefield didn't help, and I couldn't dodge any of the ranged moves, as they all seemed to hone in on me (though I was able to dodge a blizzara/aga or two).

I fought that souped up version of the smogger later on too, and almost got my head caved in. Got a couple punisher counters, which helped, but it didn't seem easyish at all. Even those 3 creatures at the grave gave me issues, though that was more because of the sleep stabs.

Conversely, Rude wasn't too bad. Maybe I'm just better with the one on one battles that are more melee-based. The grab and counter attacks caught me at times.

Playing on normal difficulty.

Had my first game over on that fight. Learned a tough lesson about how you still pay the ATB for casting spells even if you get interrupted before the spell actually casts. I was just getting repeatedly chain slept and it was seemingly impossible for me to do anything about it.

So naturally the second attempt was super easy and made me feel like a scrub.

The easiest thing to abuse is elemental weaknesses with the elemental materia. Throw elemental/fire on Cloud's sword and give Aeris a levelled up Fire materia and watch Shiva melt.

The Toad King was the one fight I had to retry a lot in Chapter 8, but I think the problem was mostly getting used to Aerith.

Or you can wait til even later (like way later) to fight her with a full party.

Wish I could find another elemental materia. Only having one the whole game makes all these linked slots useless.

I didn't have any trouble with Shiva with basically no prep and solo cloud, not sure what I did differently, other than having Fire leveled up to Fira which is just decimating for her stagger.

That big wrecking ball mech was a nightmare for me and it was just a battle of attrition, had no idea what the gimmick was.

Always use assess!

I did use asses, I still didn't know what it was asking me to do and none of my interpretations of the text seemed to work.

There are a small handfull of description lines in the game that are like that.

If I recall correctly I'm pretty sure it tells you to cast magic on the ball itself to stagger it

Whaaaat I read it multiple times because I did the fight 3 times and I don't recall it specifying anything about the ball at all. Just stuff about "physical damage will eventually stagger it, even though it doesn't actually look like it's filling the meter". Maybe I'm just crazy.

Sometimes you have to scroll down with left stick, that might be one that's cut off if you don't

It def says that. But that was prob the hardest boss up to that point. God damn silence and stun.

Damn, maybe. I guess since it actually mentioned something about staggering with damage I didn't think to.

I use another linked slot for auto-cure linked with cure, though no idea if you need a linked slot for it. How does the synergy materia work? Link it with something, and another party member casts a different spell when yours goes off? Seems odd.

As for Shiva, fighting it with a full party would have been much easier I assume. I had elemental linked with fire on Cloud's weapon, and cast fira a few times to up her stagger, but she sometimes flew around so fast, that fira would miss.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to struggle against the sleep-inducing creatures too. My first game over actually came via Reno in the church. Got careless/greedy, and went to full-on into damage, EMP mines basically did me in since he comboed me right after. Aside from the 2 Shiva defeats, that was my only game over so far though!

No only blue materia need to be linked. Auto-Cure will work without being linked although I assume you still need to have a healing materia equipped as well. That I'm not sure of.

So if Cloud is your leader, and you have synergy linked to fire on Tifa, then once you use any skill physical or magic then Tifa will follow with a basic Fire spell. She'll never use the more advanced versions and she has to have an ATB charge for it to work.

Synergy seems like a completely worthless Materia that only exists to stop you from having to pause. They still spend the MP, still use an ATB, and only use the level 1 spell.

Yeah it's not good. If you switch characters frequently like you're supposed to then Synergy has no use. Potentially could be a hindrance even.

Interesting. So synergy sounds relatively useless. Good to know. I assume first strike isn't that useful either, since whoever you're maining can get up to a bar fairly quickly by just attacking.

It has been very minutely useful in using assess before the battle starts.

Is there a way to view enemy data after assessing, or do you have to actually use assess every time?

I think if you press the middle button on the PS4 controller, the assess data comes back up. Not 100% sure, though I remember reading something like that.

I put first strike on both characters I'm not maining. Because their ATB is slow, it's nice having them with abilities ready at the start. Not that useful for longer fights though.

Yeah Auto-Cure was confusing to me too, it doesn't seem to work without cure materia equipped but then it's kind of pointless to use 2 slots for cure since you can just command your party to cast it. I guess it's designed to make the game easier for people who refuse to switch/command other characters?

Also I lost to Shiva about 5 times with Solo Cloud before I just equipped Ifrit and Elemental-Ice on my armor. Ifrit turned that fight into a joke

No items at all or no items in fights? Either way that sounds stupid hard as I have heavily relied on items for healing so far

MP auto-regens in fights but at a pretty slow pace

And you never want to be in a fight in hard mode so...

And no items period.
