Michael Che is paying homage to his grandmother, Martha, who recently died of coronavirus complications, in the kindest way possible. The Saturday Night Live star will pay one months rent for 160 residents in his grandmothers public housing complex in NYC. Its crazy to me that residents of public housing are still expected to pay their rent when so many New Yorkers cant even work, Che wrote on Instagram Wednesday. Obviously I cant offer much help by myself. But in the spirit and memory of my late grandmother, Im paying one months rent for all 160 apartments in the NYCHA building she lived in, he continued. I know thats just a drop in the bucket so I really hope the city has a better plan for debt forgiveness for all the people in public housing, at the very least. I visited a NYCHA building recently and they have signs plastered all over the place about the 8 ways to pay your rent while social distancing. How much does NYC public housing cost? I know regular NY rent is crazy high so this gotta be at least $160k right?
