The government needs to tell you when the environment is safe as you haven't got the means to determine it. You are effectively a toddler as you have no way of comprehending the threat beyond what your authority tells you.

I slightly agree. We could track the news ourselves but honestly if the government hadnt done anything id assume it wasnt that bad. Didnt necessarily need to be the government though stores radically changing hours and how they do business would be enough to get the point across to me but apparently government had to tell a lot of them to do that.

Or they could tell us what the threat is and suggest what we do but then let us make the decision for ourselves

The problem with that is that the implications go beyond the decision maker. Sure, it's fine to decide for one's self if the personal risks of an action are worth it or not, but when those implications go beyond one's self and have the potential to inflict deadly consequences upon dozens, hundreds, thousands, and more people, a body of greater authority needs to get involved.

It's like drinking and driving. Not every drunk driver fails to make it home safely. With just that in mind, it really shouldn't be to hard to justify leaving the risks down to the discretion of the driver. But it doesn't end there. Often times, a drunk driver who gets in an accident ends up killing other people, people who were doing everything the way they were suppose to. It's not just the drunk driver who suffers the consequences for their actions, anyone around that person can end up suffering because of them too. In the same way, letting people congregate, mingle, and circulate in the middle of a global pandemic risks not only themselves getting infected, but also spreading that infection to any number of others.

Bottom line is, this isn't about forcing people to make the safe choice for themselves, it's about making sure they make the safe choice for themselves and everyone around them. People in a situation like this aren't just responsible for their own health and safety, everyone bares responsibility for everyone else's health and safety.
