There are many facets to this answer:

1 - A lot of people here are really narrow minded, didn't see much of the covid stuff firsthand and don't pay attention to things outside of their bubble, and arrogantly believe it won't or can't get bad here.

2 - a lot of people in the USA mismanage their finances, and far too many people run into medical debt that derails their finances. We're only supposedly the richest country due to how top heavy we are.

3 - pretty much all of the MAGA cultists want to try and bounce the DOW back to try and increase Mango Mussolini's reelection chances since that's realistically his only hope.

4 - kinda related to point 1 but there are way too many people here who are easily duped into believing crazy conspiracy theories that serve to undermine how seriously people take these kinds of situations and fuel the dissent against the "government overreach" that is these (honestly, pretty half assed) shutdowns

Too many Americans are arrogant and stupid. God will save them, the millions of people who are starving all around the world are only starving because they don't believe in God. White American's believe, so that mean's God will save them.

They also believe making sacrifices save lives means their rights are being stripped away forever. Sure yeah some do it because they need money, but most don't. You can tell by their protest signs, they way they act, the props they bought, the gas money they spent to fill up their f150. Nobody cares about their fellow man anymore, it's all about their own selfish wants. The government is taking my rights. Yep, idiots have been saying that for 150 years and guess what, we still have our rights.

Everyone the world over is doing something and it's proven to work, but America knows better. Lets save the economy by causing more death and another eventual shutdown because we are too stupid to stay inside for 5-8 weeks like everyone else on the planet. Everyone will be opening up, and we will have our thumb up our asses playing the blame game of why we are seeing so much preventable devastation.

Yep. I got furloughed, I'm "eligible" for UIC, but I've been in the system for a month, have not received anything, none of my messages have been responded to, and I can't reach anyone by phone. So in order to make ends meet I'm applying for temp jobs that pay significantly less then the job I got furloughed from. I don't want the shutdown to end per se, but on the other hand the Govt isn't going to do shit.

Is it that difficult the understand some people find more enjoyment and purpose in life in their jobs than in sitting in front of the TV or shitposting online all day every day?

Or that even without that, don't find fulfillment in those things more than we do a long list of things we can't do anymore because we must shut down any activity if there's a chance of 2 people coming in 20 feet of each other, and as such would like some of them to open in exchange for doing our own jobs.

I get it, it's easy for some of us, but for others, we're arrogantly telling them to live an unfulfilling life confused not everyon has the goal of binging everything on netflix and calling that a good day's effort. I swear some people saw the fat guys in the chairs in Wall-E and felt that was a goal to strive for.

The US is going to get everyone killed.

It's a mindset that everyone in the world is honestly afraid to face and might actually do some good for it to be rebuffed by another country- that the US as is, is in a death spiral. And that death spiral WILL kill the world. Not the country or the region, the world.

This Coronovirus and the US are extremely visible ways the US is doing this. Every time someone has laughed at climate change or poo-pooed people who said we NEED to transition to alternative fuel sources or that multi-billion dollar companies shouldn't exist- all of those are problems that had been growing over the 2010's that no one felt was important to change because we were at the end of history.

Well, here we are.

And things are about to get a LOT worse.

Yeah, it's so much better not being able to work coz your boss died from a virus and your company was crippled by unexpected deaths and sick leaves.

I'm sure you'll enjoy life so much more when you have to go to work with loss of lung capacity, 102 F fever and painful cough.

Or when you get tested and have to be isolated at home / hospital.

Or when you get bound to a ventilator, unable to do anything at all except wait and pray.

And you might become the reason the above happens to your close friends and family.

.

Sorry dude, but sometimes you gotta realize what you WANT to do does not matter in any way and you gotta find other things to do to protect your health and the health of others.
Same for companies that suffer from covid lockdowns: you need to find something else to do to protect yourself. Like producing masks, medicine, saving people's lives, maybe? Instead of abusing your workers like Amazon does.

I think some of the cultural explanations in this thread (Americans are arrogant and stupid; America has a culture based on working until you're dead) are hard to square with the fact that public support for ending the shutdowns is at ~10%. To the extent that we seem "thirsty" to reopen, it's coming from two groups:

1) GOP elected officials who refuse to prolong a situation in which unemployed people can't be blamed for their circumstances
2) astroturfed protests designed to make the former group look like they're caring for anyone except the largest donors

I'm not saying stop quarantine. I'm saying quit being holier than thou dicks about it because you are coping better than others. This is a time for empathy to console people into doing what is necessary, not the left's usual "won't you idiots just accept how smart and right I am and do what I tell you blindly" attitude.

I get it. You're scared of dying, and maybe others should be too. Don't take it out on everyone else scarred people like you will never let us out of the house again. Don't take it our on people scarred the supply of food or other essentials will dry up because we assumed the stores would last forever and not need to be replenished.

I'm not asking this to stop. I'm answering the question of why other people are, and am depressingly unsurprised that I get responses that I can sum up as "how dare people not think and value the same as me, aren't they all idiots". I'd like to think we can try and make this easier on people obviously having trouble with it, but people's propensity to be assholes seems to be winning.
