Been looking at some in the $400 to $500 range, and I'm leaning towards this one. Is it any good for the price I'd be paying for it, or should I look at others? https://tinyurl.com/y9hqhnt4

Just build one. Just spec it out so it doesn't hit a brick wall once the new consoles are out and ports would require more resources.

What would you be using it for? If you're just using it for internet, email, MS Office, that's fine, as it doesn't have a dedicated GPU so gaming is out, as is audio/video processing. Ventilation and cooling is very average for a prebuilt, so expect minimal.

that is an oem computer, do not count on being able to upgrade a single thing in it.

you're also not going to be playing games on it, or anything like content creation.

Asked about that before on GameFAQs before I got my current computer in 2014, and was told that for the price range I was looking at (same as I am now), there was little difference between pre-built and picking the parts out myself. Don't know if that's changed since then or not.

Was looking to do some gaming on it, though mostly single player stuff. Not concerned about getting the highest framerate, nor about getting the highest possible resolution, but mostly with being able to play stuff without having to put all the graphics settings on minimum, especially games that have been released in the past 3/4 years. I could name one or two specific games I have in mind if needed

yeah you're absolutely not doing any of that on the computer you linked.

when people say pre-built, they meant something from like, ibuypower.com, not a used business pc.

you're going to need a gpu, not intel integrated. getting a used business pc and trying to upgrade it isn't the worst idea out there, but it's also tricky. often times the power supply cannot power it, and the majority of the time you can't swap the power supply for something better, either, since the motherboard will be custom and require custom power connections.

your best bet would be to hit up craigslist or facebook trade groups and look around. and if you do find something that looks appealing, ask someone to make sure it's actually worth it or not. one of my dumbass friends just spent $800 for a computer off craigslist, when the computer was only worth around $300.

Something to think about. One of the biggest problems with finding one through Craigslist or Facebook trade groups (for me) would be that unless the seller is willing/able to ship it to my place, I probably wouldn't be able to get it, since my state is still under a stay at home order. That aside, any suggestions on what to look out for?

If you're trying to start somewhere, work backwards from the specific games you have in mind. Look up their minimum and recommended requirements.

Another website that lays out a bunch of different builds at different price points: https://www.logicalincrements.com/

I find it funny that you got a new PC in '14 and now you are looking at one that has a CPU that was released in '14 as a replacement.

The one I got in '14 was an off the shelf computer from the Walmart in the city I was living in at the time

I'll keep that in mind. I'll certainly take a look at the website you linked to as well, especially since this is the second time I've had it recommended to me

This a good tutorial for building a PC for someone that's never done it?
