Both have their pluses and minuses and I enjoy both so clearly I choose both.

If I absolutely had to pick one I'd pick WRPG's though.

WRPGs definitely. Not that JRPGs are bad but they're just nowhere near as good as the top offerings of WRPGs

I play more JRPGs these days because my computer sucks and console ports of WRPGs are rarely great. But WRPGs are my favourite. Although getting into the Trails series may change my mind on that soon

J overall but I do like a number of W.

W tends to be more customization-and-growth focused, which I have this weird dichotomy with:

1. I obsess over making it perfect and end up having no fun.
2. I screw up anyway and end up making the game impossibly hard.

I'd rather the game just give me my stats and skills and maybe let me adjust them for the present only.

i cant think of any significant issues I have with either genre, though. Though Im not really a fan of some wrpgs use of pseudo DND battle systems. Stuff like KotOR and Neverwinter Nights just feels weird and it takes me a while to get used to it lol

that's not what a JRPG means. That's just a turned-based JRPG.

JRPG isn't a genre. It's a RPG that comes from Japan. They can be turned based like FF, DQ and SMT. Or they can be action based like Dark Souls, Tales, and the Mana Series.

Both the J and the RPG are misnomers imo.

The difference is definitely more about style than country of origin, and the term "RPG" is slowly just coming to mean "video game."

JRPG and WRPG are styles. The country they're made in is irrelevant. If I head down to my local strip mall and order Lo Mein cooked by a bunch of Mexicans in the kitchen, I'm still eating Chinese food.

Japanese have been making action RPGs just as long as turn-based and all Japanese RPGs are based on Western RPGs because those came first. People in Japan would just differentiate by country of origin. If you think JRPG means turn based then does that make the originators like Wizardry JRPGs? That can't be right.

There are tropes and common elements that WRPGs and JRPGs tend to have, but if a game moves away form those, that doesn't mean that the game doesn't fit the description. The best and way to classify whether something is a WRPG or JRPG is the place of origin, as their names suggest. This is because any other classifications are malleable and unspecific to the point of uselessness, more so than genre classifications as a whole.

What could possibly be more useless than distinguishing by country of origin? Even if it's literally just how pointy the hero's hair is, it still gives you more information about the game itself than literally where the office space the developer rents is.

That is just incorrect.

First of all, I'm not exactly sure when the names got changed but the original names for these styles of games were "PC-Style RPG" and "Console-Style RPG" with WRPGs being the "PC" and JRPGs being the "Console"

The names were eventually changed because Japanese devs kept making more and more "console style" RPGs.

Secondly, genres and styles are in fact malleable and subjective. A game doesn't have to be just one thing and never did. Is Borderlands a first person shooter or an RPG?

At the end of the day, Demons Souls and derivatives are styled as the old PC style making them WRPGs.

Wait was King's Field a JRPG or a WRPG? What about Shadow Tower? Demons Souls? When did FromSofts series of RPG games become Western? This concept is just whacky. Does Falcom make WRPGs? Are Fallout and Fallout 2 JRPGs? What about now? How much action does it need to change country of origin?

Can't say I have a preference for either

Westerns are usually wide, open world filled with sidequests and collectibles and general minimal focus on the overarching story. You're more encouraged to run around and spend 90% of your time wandering, and only 10% or so on the main story.

JRPGs tend to have better combat and more character customization with regards to skills, abilities, and things like that. Characters usually are more distinct from one another and the story is a very important aspect of the game, so they are usually more linear with fewer distractions and sidequests.

Old PC style is Wizardry, Ultima, Rogue, etc. These have way more in common with what you are calling JRPGs. Which makes sense, since the Japanese started making games after playing Western games. Demons Souls is just From Software putting the Shadow Tower series in third person view. Which was already derived from King's Field. It has nothing in common with old Western PC games. Not sure where that link comes from.

JRPGs are game in which a character roles in the story is predefined, and WRPGs are ones in which their role isn't predefined. Everyone ones overall story in any JRPG is the same, even their may be some small changes here and there. In any WRPG the story can change quite a bit depending on your actions even if certain parts will always happen.
