nah its not. sotns castle is a chore to get through because of poorly placed teleporters and everything dies instantly. you never actually get to see a bosses full moveset. alucard is also too slow unless you get use to bat movement shenanigans. also the inverted castle is a really bad way to extend the length of a game.

chrono trigger (though in a completely different genre) doesn't suffer from any of this.

In that case you'll enjoy SotN. Bloodstained is a reflection of the Castlevania gameplay that started with SotN.
I'm not exactly a fan of the Castlevania games prior to SotN.

It's an awesome game but it's more in the vain of the 2D Metroid games. Also, the 2nd half of the game kind of sucks. But the first half is top notch.

Yeah that's why I can't properly answer this. I think SotN is a near masterpiece but I also realize that there's bias there. I've replayed it multiple times over the years and it has indeed aged well at least. Bloodstained I was pretty wowed by. It's one of the best Metroidvanias.

The music, the easy game play, the exploring, the characters [freaking Dracula, Frankenstein, ghosts and other classic monsters], the levels are well designed too.

The atmosphere and music are pretty damn great. Any time I have an urge to play the game I just put on the soundtrack and that cures the itch. They're better than the final product IMO. The 2nd half after the map gets inverted is a step down. Also the fact that only one music track was used for this portion of the game is so dumb.

Yeah, as someone who likes nearly all of them, don't play Simon's Quest. It's more open-ended than the ones you've played, but it doesn't give you any information on what to do or where to go. The control is exactly the same too, whereas SotN is incredibly smooth.

It's not like Alucard is as slow as molasses. And in addition to the bat there's the wolf and high jump for vertical scaling. I never understood why moving too slow is a frequent complaint in games anyway. Like how often is it so noticeable that it negatively impacts the game for someone? Alucard is moving slightly slower than the average playable character in that genre.

And bosses and enemies only die instantly if you cheese the game with the variety of broken shit you can get. You can choose not to use those obviously.

No it's really easy to over level yourself during the course of SotN. There's only a little difficulty in the beginning then the rest is too easy. I loved that Bloodstained had a more balanced difficulty.

SOTN is definitely an easy game, but it's not totally braindead easy. Unless you use the really OP stuff.

You're right, Bloodstained balanced its difficulty better. I think there's a lot of stuff Bloodstained does better, which makes sense of course since Iga has had all this time to improve. I still like SOTN slightly more overall though.
