PBS still gets to air new Sesame Street episodes. You just have to wait awhile for them. Almost a year.

it's surprising that they ran out of money, considering everyone i know with a kid (including myself) buys a ton of sesame street merch. i swear i see more of those toys these days than disney products, but maybe that's because i see more little kids, ok?

there's more to the story than just that if you read the article RC posted. but you're more of a surface-level kind of thinker, i understand you not grasping the actual reason it happened, ok?

Came in to say "Because PBS couldn't afford to fund it anymore, and if HBO didn't pick it up it was going to stop being made", but the articles posted cover that pretty well.

Though it's funny to remember that the only reason that show ever existed in the first place was as part of an attempt to get educational programming for inner city kids and disadvantaged youth, and now those specific kids will never get to see it.

Maybe not never, but it's definitely screwy how the very kids this was made to make up for resource disadvantages are now being screwed by resource disadvantages....

It still airs on PBS, just with a 9 month delay after HBO. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/sesame-street-will-now-premiere-hbo-fall

It was also a 5 year deal, so the original deal is close to ending.

Yeah that's why I said maybe not never.

The poor kids are still at a disadvantage here, considering the wait time.

With a 9 month delay, I wouldn't personally say 'just'.

That said, getting Sesame Street episodes a few months later isn't that much of a disadvantage. Sesame Street doesn't really have the kind of social significance that's needed for kids to feel left out for seeing the episode after all their friends, and it's not like older episodes are any less educational. Last time I checked, C is still for "cookie," and that's good enough for me.

I wasn't aware that the show's content was so time sensitive.

Yes and no.

I mean technically there's ways to see the episodes I grew up with likely.

It's just weird that the kids this program was made for get it so much later. Is that better?

Why the hell is the government funding Sesame Street, especially when it recives BILLIONS of dollars in merchandising alone?

The real irony here is that I used to watch more HBO than Sesame Street when I was a kid.

Does it really matter to a 4-year-old? Learning how to count to 10 isn't going to change if they watch it now or next year.

I could show a tyke an episode I remember from the '80s where kids were forging signatures on baseballs and selling them. All was going swell until Ron Cey asked for a Ron Cey autographed ball and the tried to sell him one. Would it really matter that the kid watching would have no idea who Ron Cey is (or, really, probably anyone under the age of 35, except for maybe some huge Chicago Cubs fans)?

Technically in newer episodes they tackle more issues.

I just think even if someone doesn't consider it a disadvantage, it's really weird.

True.
I meant more as in they added new ones, not more as in quantity.

However poorly worded post is poorly worded.
