How would you rate Final Fantasy 2? (Discuss which version you are rating too)

Welcome to my series of topics where we will discuss and rate every single main line Final Fantasy title, as well as Tactics!

How would you rate Final Fantasy 2? And no, I don't mean 2 on the SNES. We know better than that.

I thought that Final Fantasy 2 tried to move the series forward, but the whole key word system was REALLY poorly implemented. I think such a system could have worked, but literally being able to use it for anything and everything is just tedious.

Also, quite frankly, I barely remember anything in the narrative and the tedium of the key word system is what I remember most from it.

I give it a 4.

Final Fantasy 1 Stats

Average Rating: 5.96 (29 votes cast)
Most Common Rating: 7/10 (9 of 29 votes)

For the record, I believe I played the GBA version.

Not sure if that was an improvement on the Famicom version or not.

Easily the worst mainline FF. Not sure how to rate it in context of its time. Would rather play DQ than FF2. As basic as it is, I prefer the story of FF1 because of the time travel shenanigans. Better than Ultima, I guess.

3/10 (GBA version)

I couldn't get through this as a kid, and I doubt I would have the patience for it as an adult. The leveling system is definitely unique, but I hated it. Makes me think of Quest 64 (where you have to let enemies hit you to build up your defense).

Minwu is really cool though. Firion's design is also nice.

I give it a 5. I loved the way you got stronger. The only ones who didn't like it is because they powered their characters up to comically overpowered levels and bitched because they destroyed everything.

It's not very good, but I enjoy playing it every so often. I have both the PS1 Origins version and the GBA cart. I like both for different reasons, the GBA version has a better translation and presentation, but the PS version still has the cancel glitch to power up weapons and magic faster.

FF2 isn't even in my bottom 3 FF games, those would be 3, XIII, and XV.

The first two are the only main series single player games I've never played.
Wasn't the second game considered kind of a flop even for the time?

It is hard to really say, since it was JPN only until the PS1 and GBA remakes. I assume it did alright in Japan though.

Oh, I will say it had some great songs in it. 3 kinda destroys them both in terms of Famicom FF music, but still, 2 sounded amazing.

2/10, gba port. It's bad. It's grindy. And apparently the nes version is even worse because it had maximum stat caps shared between all stats or something, yuck. Music is okay at times. But there's TOO DAMN MANY monster rooms. "Hey let's add 6 doors in this floor and one goes down, one goes up, another goes to a room with a chest and the rest have increased monster rates and you start in the middle of the effing room if you enter."

Plus the worst ultimate skill in the entire series.

8/10. It is a better game than most Final Fantasy games, IMO. Loved the leveling system and I thought the Emperor was a good villain.

5/10 (PSP version)

Not much to say. The leveling system is annoying, and doesn't really work well unless you know how it works prior to playing the game. The story is whatever. Not offensive, but very forgettable.

But I don't think it's a steaming pile of garbage. The sprite work and music are nice and the game was entertaining enough to see me through. But I'll probably never play it again.

8, it was the first FF game to have characters with personalities and I say they did a good job with that. The leveling system was also interesting and worked for me playing through the game normally. Also the Emperor is arguably the biggest baddie in the series.

3/10 NES, 6/10 GBA, voted 5

I don't mind the leveling system, except that it was very exploitable. The characters were good, especially for the first Final Fantasy to do specific characters. Plot was fine but nothing special, though I do like the Emperor. Overall it was pretty decent but not great. NES gets points docked off for the hard stat cap, being grindier, and just generally worse in nearly every way.

Also Soul of Rebirth is kinda neat.

Bonus, since I wasn't here for the first

Final Fantasy I

NES: 7 GBA: 8 Modded NES: 10
Overall Score 7/10

I love this game. My introduction into Final Fantasy and RPGs that aren't Pokemon in general. NES version gets held back by some annoying bugs, GBA version has some cool added content but gets unbalanced late game, PSP has even cooler added content but I never played it. I enjoyed the story, regardless of it being fairly bare bones (I actually adore RPGs with Dragon Quest I/Final Fantasy I esque stories. It's just charming to me I guess) and despite how simple it is, I just love this game. And then there are several hacks and mods for the NES version that take it from a pretty good game that I personally love, to an absolute 10/10 in the gameplay department.

It had some good ideas. Really while people today complain about each new final fantasy changing things too much remember that II tried a brand new very different leveling system from the first game. A system that while ambitious was broken. They have been trying to reinvent the series with every game from the beginning.

Also square did save Final Fantasy II's leveling system since it ended up being used for the SaGa games. So even if it didn't work great here they refined it.

3/10. Origins PS1 version.

It had a lot of great ideas but none of them really worked.

The conversation system was super cool but in practice it just resulted in everyone going "?" unless you asked them about one or two specific subjects. I love the idea of having an inventory (so to speak) of topics and being able to ask several different people about any of them, and how new topics get added to your inventory as you learn things about the world and story. In fact, you could easily build a whole game around this (Journeyman Project 3, anyone?). They just didn't do anything with it.

Leveling stats instead of characters was a neat idea too, but you can't exactly avoid taking damage and leveling your HP, which will be your undoing against the final boss and that other optional boss in the final dungeon who does the same thing. Nor do you have any recourse to de-level problem stats. It just wasn't well thought out. To make matters worse, it let you sell the blood swords, when they're actually the only way out of the over-HP final boss problem.

It also had this weird overworld problem where you clearly have places you're not supposed to go until later but there's nothing stopping you from going there and getting you ass kicked. There's not even a hint. You just come to a fork and if you guess wrong you die lol.

One idea it did do well was rotating your fourth party member in and out. Not sure if this game invented it or not, since this has been a popular style in lots of JRPGs and I haven't played many that were earlier. But anyway, it allowed for a simple but nice ABC story structure with good pacing and also gave you a new challenge from time to time in terms of getting used to a new character.

The best experience I had of the game was following a LP of the NES version where the LPer broke the game over his knee and Toad'd the final boss through a convoluted application of several things that aren't supposed to work, but do, because the NES version is held together with bubblegum and prayers.

The main thing FF2 did that I hated was inns would charge based on how much hp/mp you needed to refill. If you raised them too high you could potentially price yourself out of resting at an inn.
