Are there any publishers whose games you refuse to ever buy, no matter how well-reviewed they are?

Yes, who in their right mind buys EA games in the year of our lord? I can barely justify getting them used, same for Activision and Ubisoft.

I agree and Id add Disney for buying up LucasArts, firing everyone and cancelling 1313. They wont see another dime from me until that game comes out.

Publisher is largely irrelevant. I mean, a book isn't better/worse if published by Scholastic or Wiley

Books are typically shopped to publishers as a means of distribution. Unless you are talking about smaller publishing studios like Devolver, publishers usually have a huge say in what/how games get developed.

Anyways I don't really have an outright ban on a publishing studio, but I haven't bought a game from EA since Battlefield 3. I also am not buying anything from Epic until the revive Unreal (which given the success of Fortnite is never going to happen).

For me it's EA/Activision since they screwed up the Angry Birds game so bad that, to me, it became almost unplayable (freezing, etc.) I still can't understand how they could mess up a game that wasn't anything more than smashing things and killing pigs.

Yes; NCSOFT, for their cancelling of City of Heroes...though I now do have other venues for playing the game.

EA
Take-Two Interactive (which includes 2K games and Rockstar)
Activision-Blizzard (use the full name, damn it! Don't let the latter off the hook)

Just utterly greedy, evil, vile companies
I don't 100% shun them, but am very leery of buying their products and almost never do.

When leaving out the year, but still using "Anno Domini", what does it even mean?

It was a joke, bud.

But good on you for white knighting your fellow poster. I'm sure he was bawling his eyes out if he misinterpreted my intent as much as you did.

Acti-Blizz and EA are up there in companies I refuse to give money to. NCSoft as well for the same reason as had been listed before (the CoX cancellation). I will still give money to Squeenix, but only when I can get a really good deal on something I know I'm going to like; such as the Steam sale where I finally bought Octopath Traveler.

The only company I'm explicitly boycotting is Blizzard, since after what they did with WC3 Reforged (namely, pushing the Reforged update onto existing copies of WC3 and effectively breaking a 15-year-old game I already have), I can no longer trust that any game I buy from them won't be ruined somewhere down the line. Until they earn that trust back (which is going to take a long time, since even if they walk back the decision to push Reforged onto existing copies, I have no reason to believe that's a genuine acknowledgement of error and not just caving to pressure for PR purposes), I'm not buying any more of their games. In practice, the only upcoming one I have any interest in is Diablo 4, and even then I was pretty wary of it because I'm expecting it to be positively seething with exploitative monetization (plus it's not like Diablo's the only ARPG in town these days), so that's not really a big change for me, but it's still my position.

There are several other publishers that I just haven't been buying games from, though, without explicitly boycotting them. I could count on one hand the number of games I've bought in the last decade from each of EA, Activision (counting them separately from Blizzard, though even then Diablo 3 is the only Blizzard game I've bought since the first part of SC2), Ubisoft, Konami, and probably a few others. That's not really a deliberate decision not to buy from them, it's just a consequence of the kinds and qualities of games they've been putting out in that time frame and which systems they've been focusing on. I'm not buying from them not because I don't want to buy from them, but because they aren't selling anything I want to buy.

I mean, he did phrase it as a conditional boycott, and generally speaking, giving conditions means you want the company you're pressuring to yield to your demands. That condition is completely unrealistic, though, so if that's the primary basis for the boycott, it's not exactly going to accomplish much, meaning the boycott just results in limiting the entertainment available to him for no reason.

No. I based my purchasing decision simply on whether or not I will have fun with said game and if I feel the price is worth the fun. Part of which involves whether or not there are issues with the game that might be detrimental to said fun.

All that said, I am not entirely happy the direction Bioware have gone over the years. I really enjoyed Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect series, Dragon Age series, etc. and do feel they are a shadow of their former self. Maybe I will play Mass Effect Andromeda and Dragon Age: Inquisition someday but for now, other single-player games have priority.

For some odd reason though I am still content with Blizzard despite feeling they too are a shadow of their former self.

Generally, studios/publishers/developers that I never buy from are as such simply because they never make games that interest me, though there are some that I consider yellow or red flag developers, in which case I'm even less likely to consider in the unlikely event that they make a game that catches my eye.

A few examples include MicroSoft, EA, Disney, Capcom, Nicalis, and Naughty Dog. I'd still be open to buying games like Fe, Cuphead, Ori, and Rare Replay if I was hurting for other interesting games to buy. Capcom could win some points with me if they released a Breath of Fire collection, which I would buy unless they did something to really screw it up. Doing that and either finishing Megaman Legends 3, developing a new (good) Breath of Fire, or surrendering the rights to Viewtiful Joe and Okami to Platinum would resolve their flagged status.
