After learning about it's development, I have a huge amount of respect for it, but it's still not a great game

Capcom wanted DMC 2 out quick, but didn't want the DMC1 team to work on it so they put an entirely new team on the project. Development was a mess and nothing was getting done, so they put Hideaki Itsuno in charge of the project. When they did this there was about 4 months left until the game was set to launch, and it was not to miss it's launch date.

When Itsuno looked at the work that had been done by the previous team, this is what he saw:
Dante's Stinger animation

And that's it.
The rest of DMC 2 had to be finished in 4 months, and the finished product is absolutely phenomenal considering that it was made that quickly. It's pretty unfortunate that Capcom didn't delay it, it probably would have been a good game. You can see elements that were fleshed out in DMC 3 all throughout DMC2

In hindsight, it was just too much of a massive step back compared to what made the first on enjoyable.

While it's been too long for me to discuss what it may or may not have improved on gameplaywise, the characterisation has always been a fun part of Devil May Cry's identity and 2 has... barely any of it. Dante's smug and grandiose personality has to give way to a calmer, more sullen and serious persona. None of the bosses trade barbs or even speak to Dante aside from Arius and Trismagia, and even then it's just generic "hurr hurr im a villain" cliches.

The fact that we went from a Lucifer-esque angellic demon to a dorky CEO doesn't help matters, and Argosax again has so little characterisation it's hard to get invested.

The actually retconed the series and that actually makes this a 10/10
DMC 2 made absolutely no sense being at the very end of the series, but being in-between the anime and 4 makes perfect sense. Dante ends up killing Vergil in 1, which perfectly explains why he is as depressed as he is during the anime. Also, look at the beginning of DMC4, Dante is very much like his DMC2 self. Doesn't talk much, is incredibly serious. However, after he meets Nero, he becomes his old self. He found out that he has a nephew, we know for sure that he knew quick as he says so in DMC5. So putting DMC2 before 4 ends up making it perfect, Dante is depressed because he thinks that he doesn't have any family left in the world.

But if you're asking me, I'm convinced that Dante was never meant to be the main character of 2, Lucia gets more story relevance than him.

From what I can remember, DMC2 was still a fun game and the people who hated it said it was just too easy and there's barely a plot or not enough cutscenes. I mean, there were barely any of that in DMC1 TBF.

It all boils down to it being too easy.
Most enemies can be beaten with the standard pistols, so for most encounters there's no reason to use your sword. Compare that to DMC1, where guns were merely there so that you could keep your style meter up.
Swordplay aslo doesn't feel as good as 1, all of Dante's weapons are swords that play exactly the same. Compare that to 1, which yes did have two swords, but it also had gauntlets which were completely different from his swordplay.

I don't like the physics. Everything feels soft and loose instead of tight and fast, like DMC was. Jumping is floaty and the wall-running stuff isn't well-integrated.
