Would you pay $20 to watch a movie at your home rather than going to a theatre?

I know online is the future but who would honestly pay $20 to watch a movie at home that's only available for a couple of days? by that time the clean pirated version is already out and not to mention that's the cost, maybe even less for a full DVD/Blu-Ray version of it in a couple of months so you're paying more for it in the end if you want to buy it on disc or online later....

Of course there's pros and cons to this model but recouping the budget will be really tough even if cutting out the middle man but you might as well just release it direct to dvd/blu-ray at this point

For those of us that aren't social outcasts, its pretty easy to justify 20 bucks over the cost of a movie theater.

I wouldn't personally but I can see the appeal. There's a convenience factor that's not quite present with a direct to disc approach.

Also, this is one step closer to Spaceballs instant video.

I personally wouldn't do it unless that was the only time it would ever be available or something, but there's probably value in it for somebody who wants to see it ASAP to avoid potential spoilers, especially if they don't want to be bothered with the inconveniences of seeing it in a theater.

I can understand the pricing, since it could easily be a family of 4-6 viewing the movie, who'd normally spend $40-$60 or more on tickets at the movie theater. (plus I'm sure friends could share access to the movie and just view it at different times and split up the cost to be sneaky, too)
But I just live w/ my spouse, and usually wait for movies to come to the bargain theaters for like $5 anyway, so it's absolutely not worth it to me.

Hell yes. Bringing my whole family to the movies costs me at least $50-60. That's just tickets.

Aside from that, people are fucking annoying. Checking phones, talking, etc.

If watching new movies at home were an option, and I am already prepared to pay more than double what you're suggesting to go to the actual theater, then it's a no-brainer.

Stay home, enjoy the movie free from the assholes who don't know how to behave in a theater, be able to pause the movie to use the restroom or get a snack, watch on my couch instead of sharing a fucking armrest with some stranger, and save $30-40... minimum? Sign me the fuck up.

Even though I consider hanging out with friends as part of the experience in watching a movie, $20 is still overall cheaper than the cost of the ticket, gas to drive to/from, and whatever lunch/dinner we get when hanging out.

I assume duckie is referring to this:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/trolls-world-tour-breaks-digital-records-and-charts-a-new-path-for-hollywood-11588066202

Given the success Trolls has had with this launch, Hollywood is almost certain to make this a regular thing moving forward.

I've never paid that much for a digital rental, but then again those rentals that I have used weren't new release movies. They were movies that had already gone through the theaters, or were direct-to-video. I guess they charge a premium for a new release, as is the case with the new Trolls.

Digital rentals I've watched typically give you two days to watch. Not sure if that's refundable if you don't watch or simply don't like the movie and don't finish it

Not to mention having some loud and rude people in the theater that would ruin the movie experience.

As for the poll. Yes I would. That's about the price of two tickets depending on the show time, and then the cost of popcorn, snacks, or drinks can easily make it $40-50+ for two or more people.

No.

A movie theatre is cheaper and I can go see it whenever I want(though i guess true with a 2 day rental, i just pick a window that works). However during this Corona I can see why people would if its a new release movie and you cant go out. I'm not really a big movie watcher so it wouldn't matter to me.

Nope. If it's being streamed online, then you can find it somewhere for free. It only costs $10 for me to go see a movie in theatres, why would I pay double for a smaller screen?

Only for a family movie night. With 3-5 people I can justify spending the money, my sister has a great home theater anyways. Plus, we can have good food and drinks and don't have to spend $8 for a bottle of water.

As people are saying, it's justifiable for multiple people, but I'd still be inclined to just wait for it to come out in a cheaper format. I go to see movies in theatres rarely enough as it is, even being able to do so for free (my credit card rewards program offers points for free movies and I've racked up more than I will ever use and should probably switch to a proper cashback card), so paying comparable prices to just watch it on my own television doesn't make much sense.

It'll be interesting to see how well that works for non-children's movies. I imagine demand for that one was inflated by parents desperate for a new way to entertain their kids during quarantine, so those results may not generalize to other movies or once everyone is free again.
