Hell yeah I'll buy it. The series had been getting kinda stale for me but I really enjoyed how they tweaked the formula in the last two games. Not to mention Odyssey was fucking massive. Took me about 160 hours to finish that game + the DLC. About 110-120 hours was the core game alone.

I have experienced the fluctuations in quality, the first one was bad, then II was good.

The series has long since departed from the first AC game in terms of style and gameplay, even if Odyssey turned out being kinda repetitive in its own way.

I got burned out at Black Flag (which was really good btw). I got Syndicate for free years ago and haven't touched it.

Part of the problem is that I spend too much time trying to collect everything and lose interest in the main story.

Good luck. Origins isnt bad but Odyssey is huge. If you havent started them then youre a lot behind. I think Origins took me a couple of months. I still havent finished Odyssey but Im going to before this launches. So the rumour about it being Norse is true... hopefully the co-op rumour is true too, then.

I love Syndicate, but I agree it's too much of a collectathon.

The vases in Origins were a nightmare, but they fixed this in Odyssey by making them refill over time or on reload, so it didnt feel as necessary to collect them.

Depends on what you want in an AC game, really.

My brother absolutely loved the series up until Origins. The changes to the combat killed it for him. He says it's not fun any more. His biggest gripe seems to be that there are no "finishers" in the combat animations - I think they only had one finisher per weapon whereas the older games had multiple finishers depending on what angle you were attacking from and how many enemies you were fighting. Sucked the enjoyment out for him. Made combat feel more repetitive.

But I disagree. I love the new combat system. You can't just sit back and spam the counter button, which I felt made the combat in the older games more repetitive. You have to engage the enemies a bit more. It's not a complex system by any stretch, but it's a little meatier than the older games.

There's some rpg-lite progression in Origins/Odyssey. You get loot drops and upgrade gear.

And if you liked the naval battles in Black Flag, Odyssey brings those back.

The story in Odyssey got more interesting toward the end, including the DLC.

Overall I enjoyed Odyssey more, but Origins was great. I hate ranking the games because I like most of them for different reasons, but to give you an idea of how to gauge whether our tastes line up, Black Flag is one of my favorite entries in the series, and Odyssey is right up there with it.

I feel like we'd probably disagree about the exact points where those things occur, but honestly that's mostly how I kind of see the series as well.
