Depends on the person. And the style of meditation. Largely it's just training your brain to be OK with cycles where it's not fully in stimulus mode.

It's probably some effect similar to listening to calm music. But it probably would never work for me.

When you meditate you're asking your body to be void of most senses. Even thought. It brings you as close as you can back to a pre-birth state without being unconscious. Try it.

I think meditation is a horrible practice. I'm aware that this is going to be an over-generalization, but I can only speak from my own experience and this is mine. Everyone I know who practices meditation turns weird, like they're all esoteric and mystical and goofy all the time about the universe and stuff. And it's like, they're weird, robotic and stripped of any personality they used to have because they just keep a blank mind most of the time.

Sometimes just closing your eyes for a few seconds and having no sounds or stimuli is enough

Deep breaths are also relaxing

Not saying you're wrong, but two thoughts.

Perhaps the people you're referring to are meditating as escape, rather than as something to provide balance. In the same way that people can become addicted to anything that is a stimulus, I can see people falling down the faux spirituality rabbit hole and becoming enamored with bullshit zen or whatever.

In a similar, but adjacent vein, have you ever considered that what you see as personality might be acting to mask suffering or turmoil? I can't speak for everyone, but I think of people like Robin Williams whose vibrant personality and character masked some serious depression.

It's worth trying if what you're doing isn't working right now. I found it to be relaxing and worth while but admittedly I don't do it very often anymore.
