Do you think Trudeau made the right decision?

A strong majority of Canadians back a complete ban on civilians possessing assault style weapons after a man dressed in a police uniform and drove a similar style rcmp car killed 22 people and had a HIT LIST, though some were not on it.

80% polled by the Angus Reid Institute found that 80% of canadians supported the ban which gives a significant strong move for the Liberals to push forward in this mandate as it was also part of their agenda to ban such weapons in their last campaign

The federal government approved a ban of more than 1500 assault style weapons through an order in council as it describes any semi-auto firearms with large magazine ammunitions including the AR-10 and AR-15 where one of them was used in the Nova Scotia shootings and 1989 Montreal Massacre

87% in Quebec, 83% in Nova Scotia were most likely in support followed by British Columbia and Ontario with 78% as Albertans were least likely but still a majority at 65%

NDP and Liberal voters most likely support it while Conservatives oppose a ban on handguns but support assault weapons bans

Justin Trudeau said that he understands hunters needs for firearms but said that they do not need these types of weapons to take down a deer and has called on a buy back program for current owners of these weapons giving them 2 years..

Another graph shows that even HALF of canadians support a ban on ALL GUNS though it is different in each province but the support on ban of all firearms has been growing streadily for years

Do you think Canada made a smart decision?

Total waste of effort. This won't affect those it was intended to.

Makes enough sense, particularly where virtually all such weapons on the market (black or otherwise) have been imported and that import is relatively easy to control. Unfortunately, it wouldn't have done much to stop the dickbag in Nova Scotia, since he was more of a really fast serial killer than a mass shooter. His kills were at separate locations and spread out over a fair amount of time, which, realistically, he could have done just as easily with a homemade hand crossbow as with a large-magazine rifle. Broadly, though, there's really no reason for anyone to own such weaponry (they're not particularly suitable for self-defense, and hunters are fine to reload more often than that), and it does open the door to more traditional mass shootings, so might as well keep them off the streets.

I'll start by admitting that I didn't read through any articles regarding this. After the 2 year buy-back period has ended, what degree of criminal offense would it be to in possession of a banned gun?

Waste of time and effort. Only affects law-abiding gun owners in Canada. The guy who shot up NS for thirteen hours obtained his guns illegally. But yeah, I'm not surprised something like this is coming from the Liberals who don't think or use facts to make decisions. I didn't hear of this poll and I'm going to guess most conservatives didn't hear about it either.

Same as it would be now to carry a restricted firearm, at least.

Assault weapon is a term made up by liberals to scare people into giving up their guns, it's vague and leaves a lot of room for interpretation

There is no practical reason an individual needs an assault rifle with the exception of military personnel.

Our mags are pinned at five rounds. Every gun is an assault gun. We dont have near as many incidents here as other countries. Handguns are used more for most crimes and theyre already restricted. Id personally rather use a shotgun to defend myself but theres no reason someone shouldnt be allowed to own any one of the guns that were just banned.

Most Canadian conservatives aren't all that conservative. Hell, even most American conservatives aren't all that conservative.
