Them asking to change their greeting isn't a requirement, it's just something they can do once you're at the right friend level. So if it happens, you'll know you're best friends with that villager. But I've gotten five photos so far, and I think I've only been prompted to change greetings by three of them.

I guess you could soft reset after talking to the first animal if it's not the right one, before the conversation ends and it has a chance to possibly auto-save. But doesn't seem worth the effort for just a couple more points, lol.

I thought I heard somewhere that if you examine the item in your inventory it gives you a clue, but I never get any useful message.

Alright, well, my spike wasn't monstrous, but I have turnips @ 375 bells this afternoon. If you're interested, PM me and I'll give you to Dodo code.
