I'm really in the mood for an action anime, almost like a Shonen, but a lot shorter, better written and less filler.

I like the heavy focus on weapons/abilities as well as interesting combat matchups. Tournament arcs tend to help with that a lot.

Maybe something like Bleach, Soul Eater, or MHA. But like I said without a lot of their flaws.

I guess Samurai Champloo is the obvious answer, if you haven't seen it already.

Aside from that... this is a tough request. The anime you're describing might not even exist. I went through my top 200 anime, even going as far as to check and see if there was anything I rated poorly but that you might like.. and didn't find a second title that even closely fits your conditions.

The anime and manga industry is heavily driven by serialized titles that will keep selling more volumes, more chapters, more episodes, more seasons. A lot of the structural problems with the narrative of anime, and the reason a lot of them have poor endings, is because of this industry standard. Often times there is very little planning and the story just continues until it train wrecks or the series is cancelled and gets a rushed ending. Worse than that is how anime are often adapted from long running manga series, or other source materials like Light Novels with no ending in sight. This means any individual season of an anime usually has an inconclusive ending and isn't guaranteed to get a sequel.

Yu Yu Hakusho?

Its not shorter but it does have a definite ending and I feel it matches a lot of your other criteria.

I had a friend show me the first episode of Samurai Champloo actually, it seemed really good. If that's the closest thing I'll probably go for that.

I've been interested in YYH for awhile. I might check it out too, does anyone know if it's on any streaming services?

YYH is on Hulu.

My recommendation for the best "modern" (in anime release at least) shounen is absolutely going to be the 2011 Hunter x Hunter series. It's not short, somewhere in the 130s IIRC, but it really can't be beat. It's longer than YYH (same writer), but they're both long so at that point it's not much of a difference.

It really can't be beat, and is without a doubt amongst the all time genre greats.

MHA is definitely the least flawed of the three I mentioned, but it's characters aren't exactly the most unique haha

Oh god if 130 isnt too long then yes. Definitely do YYH and HXH.

One has arguably the greatest tournament arc in all of anime and the other is just one of the most epic journeys of all time.

Yeah if 130 isn't a problem then Hunter x Hunter without a doubt. Forget shounen, it's anime in general at some of it's best.

YYH probably specifically has the best tournament arc of any anime as well.

It does take a little bit to get going IMO, but when it gets going it goes.

And then it goes further.

And then it leaves the gravitational pull of the earth.

Then it comes down a bit, but that's still excellent, too.

I meaaaaaaaaaaaan I wouldn't say it a avoids shounen problems....but man do I ever fucking love The Law of Ueki.

Gash Bell is another absolutely fantastic shounen series, which a lot of people ignore because of how horrific the localization was. It and Law of Ueki are both personal favs of mine, though it's hard tonargue them over HxH.

Yes, Zatch Bell was the dub name. It is probably the single most butchered hack job 4kids ever produced, well beyond what they have ever done to any other anime. Just doesn't get brought up along the likes of what the did to One Piece and the like because it's not as high profile, but it is ROUGH.

The original is very, very good!

Samurai Champloo hits all your criteria except abilities and matchups and tournament arc

G Gundam is pretty good if you don't mind something that doesn't take itself very seriously

Kill la Kill maybe?

I think of it more as a standalone thing. There are a few different continuities in Gundam, and G is kinda its own branch. As I understand it it's a lot less serious than the others as well.

G Gundam is basically what happened when somebody wanted a lot of shounen and wanted those fights with giant robots. it is the least Gundam of the Gundams and was the black sheep for a long time but people have grown to love its stupidity.

the entire series is a tournament arc. don't do much research as it'll spoil some of the funny stuff to it but it's legit just giant robots fighting for the sake of fighting with some political stuff attached in the corner to further excuse more fighting.

HxH's old series is still good, but it's definitely a case of "there's no reason to watch this anymore". The main issue is that it had a SUPER slow start due to the misguided belief at the time of "well we gotta keep it at a pace so that it doesn't catch up to the manga", which....is a whole thing.

IIRC they get to episode 10 or so of the first series in 3 or 4 episodes of the new one, and that's not the new one moving too fast, it's the old one moving too slow.

But hey, it had a rad as hell second OP.
