The tl;dr of the article is that Meyer wanted the Cullens, the main vampire family, to be white because that's how she'd pictured them when she wrote it. Laurent, the character the title is referencing, was not made black because he was a villain, but because he was described as having "olive skin." There were other characters, such as Bella's classmates, that Meyer didn't really care about and they were more diversely casted.

And to be fair to her, the Cullens are almost universally a century or two old. The director mentions that she wanted the Alice character to be Japanese. Alice was born in 1901 Mississippi. Her being Japanese is going to make that backstory a little awkward. Hell, one of them was in the Confederate army when he was human.

This reminds me of when Twilight was at its peak and there would be topics here about what characters could kill the Twilight vampires because they're apparently super strong, there'd be the most unlikely posters who had an encyclopedic knowledge of Twilight just ready to go.
