my existence. I feel my entire field is like that. Always busy to 'improve' procedures that don't really benefit from 'improvement'...which I feel actually makes things worse as an ever-changing process to do the same thing in the same time just causes confusion and mistakes. Improving the improvement in a few years (and cyclically reverting back to the original procedure in a few years when a new person is in the office wanting to make improvements). Rushing the more important work because they're so busy with larger projects.

I guess they have to justify having us around somehow...only like 10-20% of the time I feel actually needed (and it's very critical to be quick and have someone well trained and times needed happen randomly throughout day), but can't just sit around for when I'm actually needed and need to do work within the scope of my field. It's hard to really quantify our output, so I feel we (as a field) just create big projects to change things around and buy expensive equipment and create time-intensive procedures to go way overboard on necessary accuracy of measurements. My boss's boss has no clue what my position practically does...just knows it's important and drives technological implementation.

Digging holes and filling them back up. Writing "I'm working" on forms over and over again and throwing them in a waste basket at the end of the day.

I had a job like that. I updated spread sheets and emailed them daily to over a hundred people. And if I forgot or was late nobody ever contacted me about them. Meaning nobody cared or looked at them.

It probably is, but you're worth paying for because of those critical times.

Could you come up with work to do that wouldn't be pointless?

Sounds like a "bullshit job", tbh. You're employed for the sake of employment, or to boost a boss' self-esteem.

There are people with jobs like that in my organization.

Everyone hates them and they do more harm than good, by far.
