If rent was 5 dollars the number would barely go down from that 100k. Mental illness and drug abuse is the issue. Raising rents affect the middle and lower class people if anything.

Were we to confiscate some rich fuck's ski-home in Aspen and give it to a random homeless guy in San Francisco, he's almost certainly going to hitchhike back to San Fran within a week.

Imagine telling a family who couldnt afford medicine because they were paying rent that they wouldnt be healthier if rent wasnt so high.
Shouldnt those be people eligible for Medicaid then?

Maybe not, if they're actually making money that would be decent anywhere the rent isn't too damn high.

The point here is, there's not enough supply for the demand, where it's demanded.
From that article up there:
Highest rents were found on the coasts and in Hawaii as Washington, D.C. topped the nation with an expensive one-bedroom apartment at an average $2516. Massachusetts followed at $2218 and Hawaii came in third with an average rent of $1880.
If you want to live more economically, head to West Virginia where you can rent a one-bedroom apartment for an average of only $637. If you want colder weather, trudge on up to North Dakota for a $672 bargain average one-bedroom unit. If neither of those suit you, try Oklahoma where you can pick up a cozy one-bedroom for an average of $680 per month.

On the other hand Utah was very successful with its program to shelter its homeless in the states empty homes. It may not be a cure-all that would obliterate homelessness but it would certainly stem it.

Probably more than you? How many hours of classes about have you gone through? How many homeless resources facilities do you volunteer at? How many homeless outreach programs are you apart? How much of this stuff do you do in your own time?

not more than me I bet. Please show me the proof and statistics that show the 500k homeless in the Us is because of Rent raising. I would like to say mental illness and drug abuse probably outweighs is by a huge huge huge margin. I forgot, posters like shock are the the worlds saviors in their white priv they know everything

Just spent the last 5 google raising rents for homeless and basically every article said that raising rents COULD lead to more homelessness. No actual studies or number. Every article basically focused on California as well too lol.

Harvard study

Important as housing is, it cannot solve all the problems of the homeless mentally ill, and many will not even be able to remain in the housing provided for them unless they also receive psychiatric treatment and other services. Often too depressed or disorganized to seek help for themselves, they confront a poorly coordinated system in which mental health, general health, housing, alcohol treatment, drug treatment, and legal services are all provided by separate agencies with unclear responsibilities, high staff turnover, poor communication, and complex and sometimes mutually contradictory rules. The federal government alone operates 42 programs serving people with mental illness, of which the two largest are SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance). Other federal programs involve medical care, child welfare, criminal justice, education, rehabilitation, and drug and alcohol treatment.

Rent in my city is about $1000+/month for a single bedroom apartment and $1500+/month for a two bedroom house. From what Ive heard, this is becoming very common.

I grew up in Baton Rouge and from what Ive heard, the rent prices are getting similar there, too. When I left Louisiana, the minimum wage was about $7/hour, so that price for rent is unsustainable for most workers. If a full time minimum wage worker cannot can not afford a single person apartment, that means that rent is too high or the wages are too low. Wages are stagnant and the cost of living is rising.

Why can't the rent, drug abuse, and mental illness all be major factors at the same time? Or is this just a petty contest of determining which is most or least significant? They're all significant.

Not to mention I hear horror stories of how some shelters neglect/abuse the homeless and/or just pocket any donations they receive instead of using them to improve the shelters

Yeah and this problem is only gonna get worse

If we dont wanna go down the rent control path maybe we should be looking into UBI adjusted by cost of living across the country
