I thought the whole point of Clerks II is that what society expects of you is bullshit and as long as youre surrounded by people that make you happy you could totally spend your life running a convenience store.

The 90s were a far different time, however. Working at a convience store isn't exclusively for losers going nowhere now. The perception has changed a bit due to economic downturns and people being laid off. A job's a job.

It is true that economic opportunities are much less common with how oppressive the class capitalism system is. It was more about the why of him being there. He had an ego like he was too good for that job, despote not really being that great an emploee, on top of what else in his life he was fucking up. The movie is a tragedy portraying the life of everyone blaming the world and the stupidity of others for their state before looking down at themselves. With Clerks 2 Smith spelled out you still have to aim to what makes you happy ,not what you are supposed to.
