Couple of points
1. We're not a hive mind and people are less worried about the end of all humanity and more worried about losing loved ones or dying themselves. "My family will die, but humanity will go on" wouldn't comfort anyone
2. Every loss of human life is tragic

Yeah the downside is if we personally get it we wont be around to see humanity survive afterwards so it sucks either way. This whole situation just sucks

Yeah the lethality of this thing isn't issue. Obviously every person that dies from is tragic. The threat of Corona virus is it's communicability rate and thus the ability to overwhelm the healthcare systems and cause people who wouldn't die from it or other causes to die. Something with the communicability with the lethality of SARS or MERS though would be the end of civilization as we know it, especially based on our piss poor preparedness for this one.
