A month ago now, though nobody bothered to tell me. Which I guess is my fault for being antisocial and falling out of communication, but it still hurts a little. She was the only person on that side of my family that I really felt comfortable with, but I hadn't talked with her in like 10 years. I feel a little down about that. Wish I were better at doing the whole family thing.

sorry for your loss.

but even if you're not very communicative with your family, you should have at least been told of her passing.

Well, that side is spread out over the other side of the country and they're kinda ... not really my sort of people. Nice enough in their way and eminently respectable, but ... idk. My mom basically ran away from home as a teenager and I've always felt they see me/us as the black sheep of the family. They just make me uncomfortable. But yeah, I wish someone had thought of telling me before they had to for estate purposes.
