It's true that many of the masks don't do much but any mask is better than nothing, plus people need to be educated on what kind of materials work better than others instead of being told they "don't do anything". The main purpose is to prevent you from touching your face and keeping your germs from your nose and mouth to yourself, not filtering things out.

Because masks only prevent transmission of a disease, they don't provide protection from breathing in pathogens unless you have a respirator that filters out pathogens, like the N95 masks.

At that point a month back, the idea was to protect yourself from people with the virus with quarantine, social distancing, proper hygiene, etc.

Now the idea is to stop the continued transmission of the virus by wearing masks, which don't really help against spreading germs from coughing/sneezing. It might stop you from touching your nose or mouth, but it is not a replacement for common sense and basic hygiene.

Now gloves on the other hand, they are useless aside from singular tasks. Healthcare, food prep, cleaning, etc. are all they should be used for. Keep your hands and personal objects clean and sanitized regardless.
