Early results seem to match my first impressions of the games

Probably FF7 but not by much. CT was also phenomenal.

I enjoyed FF7 a lot more but it's hard to explain why. CT is definitely the more polished and less flawed game. But FF7 just has this feel to it. It's a much bigger game too.

FF7 just has this feel to it
Yeah, that's exactly why I voted FF7.

CT does a lot of stuff better but 7 just has this atmosphere/feel that I really loved.

They're both great games, but are very different beasts.

CT is certainly more polished: the visual style is far more cohesive, the translation is better, there are fewer glitches and oversights, and most aspects of the game are good at the very least.

FFVII is a meatier game, with more of basically everything. I find the battle system more fun with the options that Materia give you. Even if the graphics are a mess, the pre-rendered backgrounds have a certain personality that tile-based ones don't. In terms of characters, story and atmosphere, I give the edge to FFVII.

Side quests also go to FFVII. CT's do tie better into the story, but FFVII's are more fun and involved overall. FFVII has a lot more of them too.

Both have fantastic soundtracks, but CT's is probably that bit better.

FFVII's world feels more like one. It's larger and more detailed, flying around in the airship feels more real, the towns are more interesting and numerous, etc,

Overall, I'd hate to have to choose between them. At a push, I guess I'd go FFVII.

Didn't play CT until a few years ago. The battle system feels like it would've been innovative for its time but the story and characters didn't really grab me in the same way FF7 did

CT to me was solid but not outstanding. FFVII was solider imo
