The problem here in Sweden, with the virus, is that the spread has gone out of control in elderly care homes. Our healthcare system in general is holding up well - the survival rate for those who end up in the ICU is very good compared to many other nations where the hospitals have crumbled under the pressure.

At least 75-80% of the deaths are old people in nursing homes. The vast majority of the remaining 20-25% are elderly who die in a palliative care ward. So yes, we have failed to protect our old folk. Everyone in the country agrees on this including the politicians in charge of various levels.

Nursing homes are run by each individual municipality which is bad imo while all other healthcare is run regionally. Nursing homes need to be absorbed back into the rest of the system to increase quality. We have 290 municipalities.

Young and middle aged folk, our hospitals and our economy are doing alright under the circumstances however. Whether it is right to sacrifice grandma and grandpa for wealth for the rest of the population can of course be debated heavily.

Something to note: many nations, like The Netherlands for example, dont include nursing home deaths in their COVID-numbers. So until all countries include all possible deaths the picture is not 100% accurate.

There were also some opinion pieces on The Guardian by leftists who knee-jerk praised Sweden's response. Their argument was that since Sweden is progressive, whatever Sweden does is progressive too, even if it falls in line with what they criticize the Republicans for. It's like they wanted to preserve their idealized version of Sweden as a progressive utopia, so they ignored the death rates and their own past stance.

Based on my experience working in low income areas, I think there's a few different reasons, but that's definitely one of the problems.

For starters, a lot of these communities tend to cram WAY too many people into residences not designed to house them, most likely cuz they're forced to pool their finances and all live as one super family. So if one person catches it, its likely to run through the household and 2-6 more people are going to get it.

I know I'm going to get flack for this one, but anecdotally, I think cultural attitude is a big part of it as well. Low income areas, people generally aren't practicing social distancing. They're always way too close, asking to shake hands with me, and overall don't seem to be taking it as seriously. I don't know if that's from lack of access to information or willful ignorance, but it's something I do have to deal with on a regular basis.

Assuming our antibodies work against it, no. Let's say the virus has a reproduction number of 3 for example, if more than two thirds of the people around a person with the virus are no longer susceptible, then the effective reproduction number of the virus will be below one and the virus will eventually die out. It is true however that the closer we would get to that tipping point, the more gradual progress towards it will get.

Every day I see the left gloating about how poorly these generally right-wing states are handling the pandemic but, in actuality, the top five states in deaths/1m people are all left-wing states. Ring-wing states only have three of the top 12 in terms of deaths/1m people.

California, being praised for their response, has nearly twice the deaths/1m people as Texas and pretty much the same as Florida, two states being ridiculed for their response.

Most of those immigrants are younger and the majority of death in Sweden have been the elderly as shown in the earlier stats, especially those in nursing homes. If you were to allege a conspiracy it would be the plan is to wipe out the old who cost the government money, not immigrants who work the jobs the native population doesn't want to.
