Anyone here a fan of the Oldboy korean movie? I first seen it about 10 years ago. And it became one of my favorite movies of all time. I have watched it a handful of times since then. Choi-Min Sik gave such a powerful acting role. Did anyone believe that was his daughter before it was revealed? I didn't know that would be the outcome.

By the way I also seen the american hollywood remake of oldboy, it was decent enough but didn't didn't have the emotional power of the korean version

yea, the original version of Oldboy was great, and I didn't expect the daughter twist.

I thought that the American version was terrible, though.

but it's interesting how many actors were also in the MCU: Thanos, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury, and Mantis

I like it quite a bit, but havent ever bothered to see Spike Lees remake. Have you seen the rest of the Vengeance trilogy? Lady Vengeance is my favorite, but all three are good.

Yeah, theyre all pretty rough. I like how that one has a deaf protagonist though. Its an interesting perspective to explore.

Showed it to my fiancee and she was less than thrilled lol

And Lady Vengeance is absolutely brilliant too. One of the most satisfying endings of any movie.

Love it.

I remember disliking Lady Vengeance, but I only saw it the once whenever it came out and don't remember much from it.

I have it. I dont remember it being all that expensive, maybe like $30 or so?

Also, that Ultimate edition looks really cool. I love the packaging.

For just oldboy

I think the trilogy Blu-ray is OoP now but it used to be like $60.

I like the Arrow Video cover more than that one actually. That still with the hammer is so iconic.

Anyway more like this set but apparently this has mixed reviews about region format and stuff.

It was fine. I like the manga a lot better. The supernatural focus of the twist in the films is a bit too jarring to the rest of the setting.

Actually, I guess the manga had a similar bit like that as well, but it wasn't as major of a twist.

I went into the film knowing the twist and... it just made that sex scene hotter.

That movie was so ridiculous. I had no idea what I was in for so by the end when everything was revealed, the overwhelming incest angle the movie had, I was like wtf. Why. Saw it like 7 or 8 years ago and it's probably the only Korean movie I watched and will watch if that's what the genre is like.

I remember the reason I knew about it was because of a topic about great fight scenes in movies and the hallway scene was pretty well touted. And it was pretty impressive, especially for its time. But I was not prepared for bizarre incest and tongue cutting and so much uncomfortable stuff.

Yes, Korean movies are a genre on its own and all revolve around incest

Hey, not every Korean movie is about incest and cutting your tongue off.

Also, I didn't realize Lars von Trier was Korean until just now.

I mean the ridiculous "Korean genre" comment aside, Park Chan-wook is a very, very intense director. His work is very dark and graphic and unsettling (with one exception).

He's not very representative of Korean film at large. Which is kind of why he is so renowned.

I kind of hate this one, but the direction is superb nonetheless. Kim Jee-woon rarely disappoints in that department. There's a lot of talented Korean filmmakers out there though.
