Color quality, depth of Blackness, how many back lights are there to make sure the colors are even, refresh rate which matters if you're playing any sort of twitch gaming like a fighter, number of HDMI ports and whether those are 1.0 or 2.1 ports, quality of parts and as a by-product estimated number of hours before it breaks, additional features like embedded browsing, some other things like weight or size of border around the TV itself, and probably some other things I'm not remembering.

Edit: when I said refresh rate what I actually meant was input latency but both are important.

always some annoying ass shit too like the legs of the tv can barely hold it up, or it's so thin you could practically break it with your fingers, or there are no buttons so you can't turn on the tv if you lose your remote, etc.

Some cheaper TV's lie about their GHz speed processing. They'll say they can go 120 or 240 but then in the fine print it says upscaling. Well that doesn't help when you're trying to make everything accurate for PC gaming set ups.

quality of the image, referesh rate, etc.

better tv's have better quality

one of the single best things high quality tv's give you is "true black" levels, so dark scenes look crisp without artifact and shading.

4k is number of pixels. The quality differs between brands though.

It's like getting 10 burgers from McDonald's and 10 burgers from the local gourmet burger joint. In both scenarios you got 10 burgers, but you'll definitely be getting a higher quality burger from the gourmet joint which is why you paid a lot more.

Not to mention smart TV have an OS and some smart TVs have really shitty interfaces and few apps while others have an entire array of apps. Not to mention if you're a gamer some TVs have really significant input lag compared to others (refresh rate).

Just a few reasons, I'm sure others have posted some of these as I was typing this

Contrast ratio, which is the most important aspect of picture quality. Great TVs, especially OLED, can display both dark and light elements at the same time. Cheap TVs struggle with this. The best way to see the difference is when watching movies like Gravity where you have things like stars mixed in with the darkness of space. On a cheap TV either the stars will be dim or space will be greyish. On something like an OLED or high end LCD the stars will be bright and space will be as black as if the TV was turned off.

LG C9 OLED is the TV you want if you're aiming for next gen consoles.

It has 4K and HDMI 2.1, which allows 4K 120 Hz.

It's also got the lowest latency of basically any TV.

Keep in mind that some of the 4k TVs you see for $400--$800 are priced to move and doesn't necessarily mean they are an inferior product. So at one point, those TVs were solid technology-wise, but new inventory and upgraded tech is pushing them off the shelves.

Yea, for everyday average consumers they are probably better off getting the cheaper one. They are pretty good quality.

There definitely are picture and quality differences though.

A few months ago I bought an LG C9PUA. I couldn't find any way to turn off black frame insertion (TruMotion and OLED Motion didn't change it). I was talking with LG's support for 30 minutes and they didn't know how to either.

Since BFI just looks like a strobe light to me, I returned it and bought a Samsung QN55Q80RAFXZA. I turned off BFI and it's working great since then.

This was pretty much me for years, until I got my very first "higher tier" TV in 2018 with the samsung QLED Q8FN Once you see just how bright an in-game sunrise or sunset is on a TV that can achieve those peak nits (man those sunsets in red dead redemption 2 is insane), with those nits being alongside inky blacks, its hard to go back.

I sold my Q8FN to my brother and got a cheap samsung Q9FN (samsung's top quality TV from 2018) earlier this month just so I can have something like this for the next generation of consoles. (Intentionally went with a QLED TV because I have doubts of an OLED TV's screen quality lasting 7 to 8 years with my usage habits. I am not one to drop over 1K dollars on a TV only to upgrade it right away....these things need to last me a long while. Only made that exception with my brother since he really wanted a new TV for his place and I spotted that Q9FN for 1,000 dollars via facebook martketplace).

The cheap TCL ones with Roku built in are really good for the price. There's a slight panel quality roulette at thar price, especially with Vizio, but totally worth it.
