More to the point they actually address that blackface is offensive in the movie itself and point out that it was stupid as fuck to get a white guy to play the part.

The whole thing is literally just a bunch of Trainwreck actors making a Trainwreck movie by making every bad decision possible.

At least Fallon was trying to do a Chris Rock. Note I have a lot issues with it so don't think I am saying he is cool.
But good lord Jimmy kimmel doing Karl Malone was just flat out racist. Karl Malone is country as well I think is like for AL or LA so he has an think accent. They times that by 20 and just made him stupid. And he can't stand Karl Malone.

I find the idea that people think a white guy with black makeup acting like a specific black person is equal to racially offensive stereotypes to be much more racist than the act itself.

You are basically calling A Chris Rock Impression "the same thing as all the most offensive and ignorant exaggerated impressions of black people" which is pretty fucking insulting to Chris Rock.

This whole world would be a lot less dumb if we had a seperate word for blackface and "wearing skin darkening makeup to do an impression that meant 0 offense."

So I guess the idea is that we should never do impressions of celebrities from different races. We should after all, racially segregate as much as possible, because that's what MLK would've wanted, that's how we learn equality, by never ever ever letting people forget about their racial differences.

This is so dumb, but of course Jimmy would play into it.

I don't equate it to the level of blackface from years ago nor do I find it as offensive as Kimmel's Karl Malone. But the concept is just a bit odd.

Other races can and should do impersonations of each other. It's just white people have to be a bit more careful about it just due to the history of black-face.

I mean no one is saying Fallon did a bad impersonation at all. In fact most people have praised it. So the whole "races shouldn't impersonate each other" counterpoint you are making is kinda moot.

Just watched the skit, literally not black face.

Black face are those stupid caricature ones where they paint the middle of their face black, leave neck/ears around the hairline etc. unpainted, paint on stupidly big lips and that sort of dumb shit. Kind of like the picture used to Pusha Ts Disstrack on Drake (Google image the story of adidon).

This is just a genuine impersonation.

Is literally the act of darkening your skin racist? If not then it was the impression that was somehow racist, correct?

But when it was used historically it wasn't just normal black makeup though, it involved racist stereotypes, that's the part that was offensive. So it's not the same thing as what was done historically.

Are you arguing that wearing makeup of a different skin color on it's own is racist?

Don't get me wrong. It's a great impression. He can and should do it because normally Fallon sucks. But the optics of it is just weird. Do I think he was malicious? No. Racist? No. Inappropriate? To an extent yes. Because it's more than just the whole makeup thing.

It's not on the level of other stuff. It's not something he should be canceled for nor will he be canceled for. It's one of those "Hey that wasn't really cool of me to do. My bad" and that's the end of it kind of things.

I'm just saying your original point that people shouldn't take shots at him because of his track record doesn't hold up. If you do a wrong thing, you get called out. Simple as.

If you want to argue that no one should call him out because it wasn't harmful to begin with, that's a different story. To be honest I agree, but then I don't think I have much to add to the blackface discussion either way.

I wouldn't say he felt obligated to do it. Fallon very much comes across as person who if he thinks he upset a person, he would go out of his way to make things right because of who he is.

All of his former coworkers and employees and really everyone speak glowingly about the kind of person he is.

If someone like....Chappelle or anyone else who has made their career about not giving a fuck had that response I could see your point. But Fallon's apology is exactly how I would expect him to respond.

I feel like, you can't divorce something like this and legitimate blackface due to the long and ugly history concerning the latter.

obviously, Fallon's intentions weren't to insult or demean black people, but have some fun relating to a single person.

but the fact is that people are going to take offense to any non-black person painting themselves black, and their feelings are valid due to the history around blackface. you can't just repurpose something and hope that it will be seen differently.

I'm not into "cancel culture", though, and this was a while ago, and Fallon meant no malicious intent. so personally, I feel that this apology is a good thing, and hopefully Fallon will face no further backlash.

You face some kind of consequence for the harm you did? If we're drawing extremes, what's the other side of this coin? Never face any kind of consequence for harmful actions?

Obviously there's nuance and drawing these extremes doesn't help move the conversation on at all. To me it seems like its enough to apologise and move on in this case, but that's just my view as someone who's never known what it's like.

And no - I don't think the Wayan Brothers in White Chicks is a good example of "what it's like", because if I have to fish around the annals of history to find a small handful of "whiteface" incidents then we're clearly missing the point.
