Arguably better than Super Metroid in some aspects.

I really want to go back in time and tell 14 year old Alis play this game!

I loved Prime and Zero Mission, but for some reason never played Fusion until last year.

Amazing game. Teenage me would have been creeped the fuck out by the atmosphere and the SAX.

Its a mixed bag. The linearity and the forced breaks for long dialogue definitely dont work in the games favor

I really do like the game though

I mean, the dialogue isn't exactly terrible, you can mash through it super quickly.

This is more or less my opinion. Even the option to turn off Waypoint markers would have made the game better, but it is one of the best metroids even as is.

I love Fusion for many things, but especially for how well it handles the horror elements. I much prefer it to Super for control reasons as well.

Linear isn't inherently bad. Being railroaded down a one-way path is.

Does Fusion have the most difficult secret to get in the series? From what I remember, the path you had to take to get to secret Adam dialogue was insanely difficult and required crazy precision.

It's aged way better than Super, especially in the controls and polish departments.

That's not to say it's necessarily a better game, though. The things people like more about Super have nothing to do with aging.

you mean how often it seemed like samus was forced off of the beaten path?

like don't get me wrong, it was still linear, but damn did it make it feel like you had to find your own path at times.

That's fine too.
Blocking off the way back to where you were is the sin Fusion kept committing. Getting brickwalled by a boss means you just have to "git gud" and power through it, whereas the prior games didn't really care (most of the time) if you scrounged around for missed pickups in places you've already been.

Other M even so far as to roll over and die into an unwinnable game-state if you went backwards at the wrong time.

More generally than just Metroid, though, there's really no such thing as being so linear that you can't still make it into a good game. Hyper Void is both one of thw moat linear and one of the best games I've ever played.

It's kind of one of my pet peeves when people whine that this or that is too linear. Maybe it's not your cup of tea but it's a design decision like any other and it's kinda closed-minded to write off a lot of great games over.

I really don't feel like Fusion improved over super in any meaningful way. The smaller screen makes the design more difficult and the movement feels so much weaker. Half of the fun in Super is learning the movement tech to sequence break.

Super is just so monumentally sluggish in comparison that it's hard to go back to.

I like Metroid Fusion, but it didn't like its structural layout and how linear it is compared to other games. Having a computer to talk to removes the sense of isolation and dread being a bounty hunter on an alien planet brings. Other than that, the game is mechanically sound, and the gameplay is great.

I find a lot of my favorite games suffer from being misunderstood by people who wanted something different despite the game never promising said different thing.

Super Metroid's controls aren't as streamlined, but they give you so much more freedom.

Fusion is still a solid game that holds up fairly well, but it still really doesn't feel like a Metroid game at times. The SA-X encounters are really the only truly great moments in the game.

The only thing Ive ever found wonky about SMs controls were wall jumps. And those are supposed to be somewhat cumbersome and technical. So fucking satisfying, for instance, when you manage to skip the Ice Beam by wall jumping up that shaft with all the floating fish things.

Fusions controls work perfectly fine for what it wants to be, which is a more stream-lined, action oriented title meant to be played in short bursts on your handheld.

If were comparing game design, Im much more frustrated with the latters philosophy of hiding mandatory routes behind obscure graphics tricks and bomb puzzles. >__>
