What is it about the twisting of slogans, that it can make a literal and correct wording of a sentiment, mean the exact opposite?

Context. Its always said in response to someone saying Hey look at how unfairly the police are treating these black people, their lives are important

The ALM person goes All lives matter like thats supposed to somehow negate the original point. Its then generally followed by some statement about how white people get killed by police and no one cares or something.

It would be like saying Man breast cancer sucks, we should try to do something so less people die from it and your immediate response is All cancer sucks, what about all the men that die from prostate cancer, dont you care about THEM!??!

Its just a bullshit way to respond to someone about something like this.

It's more succinct, which is beneficial for messaging (particularly with social media campaigns involving character limits, hashtags, etc). The "too" shouldn't need to be explicitly stated. Just like "all lives matter" doesn't need to be explicitly stated in response to saying black lives matter.

It's quite simple:

The "statement" Black Lives Matter may appear ethnocentric, and in response one would say "All Lives Matter"

However, the title of a movement doesn't have to be wholly representative OF that movement.

Another example would be the Coastguard... they're allowed to guard more than the coast.

Breast cancer gets disproportionate amount of financial support and disproportionately low deaths. Other cancers are getting insufficient support because all the focus is on breast cancer. All cancers matter, but because breast cancer charities have the most money, they can do the most advertising and money isn't put where it's needed most.

That all people are treated like shit by US police? the stats support no racial difference in like-for-like crimes but black people want to make it about them when it's a "police in the US are fucking garbage" issue. But the point of BLM is that this isn't the reality. We routinely witness and experience events that indicate as such. That's why saying ALM discredits the movement. It doesn't mean "only black lives should matter, it means "black lives should matter, too."

I'd say that it really isn't worth explaining anymore though - especially here on PotD. The vast majority of people either got it right away, or understood once the misunderstanding was cleared, or just don't care either way.

The only people who continue to argue how wrong, stupid, or racist it is, are exactly the people you would expect to do so. Not a single name among those here upset about the name surprises me.

I gone to like breast cancer walks where people are mostly talking about how breast cancer sucks. But some people are talking about other cancers that also suck. I think this is sort of a different thing, tbh... By that, I mean its kind of weird connection the BLM Movement to like Cancer or whatever...
