The new legislation, expected to be formally introduced to the General Assembly in the next few days, lays out a number of new provisions. Among them, all officers in the state would be required to wear body cameras, and guidelines would be put in place for how and when footage from those cameras should be released. Officers who were fired from one city for excessive use of force would be prohibited from applying to work in another municipality in Colorado. It would be mandatory to collect data on who is being stopped and searched to help prevent racial profiling. And the legislation would also abolish qualified immunitywhich prohibits a public official from being sued in the event they cause serious harm to an individualfor police officers.

Shouldn't this be something that was already in place? I guess I never really realized how backwards we were doing things where this is something that is being fought for. I guess better late than never, but it just puts into perspective how much work still needs to be done.

While this is true, they have reduced public complaints against cops in some places by 80%.

Basically it's harder for people to make shit up about cops when they know it's being recorded.

Body cams for cops are a great idea. It's just the idea of them being mandatory for all cops at all times that's nonsensical.

Still, like another poster said, we need more than consequences that are actually enforced, we need core changes to how police are allowed to operate and engage with the community.

It's not the cameras, it's the storage of all the video. And with the way our system is set up, it takes weeks maybe months to go to court for basic shit like a speeding ticket, holding it that long adds up fast.

There needs to be government made central repository for all Police Body Cam that can be legally accessed by the public when it comes to cases.

Holding it "Forever" is wasteful of space and expensive.

But 2^32-bits ~= 49.7 days in standard Computer measurements when using ms as your base time unit is long enough which is a bit over 7 weeks.

Any relevant incident can have the footage scrubbed and saved in a special directory for each case for all related camera's.

Is there a good reason to not move to Colorado? They were one of the first (if not the first) to legalize marijuana, they passed a bill limiting prices on Insulin, and now they're trying to actually do some thing about police brutality.

No joke, my boyfriend and I have been talking about moving to Colorado Springs. We were there visiting friends for a wedding in early March (thank God we just missed the Corona explosion) and it's a beautiful place. Plus dispensaries.

And it goes beyond just policing and racism with the Democrats. They're the kings of feel good half measures in general that never really address the issues.
