Can't say I'm too surprised by FFX at #1. I am surprised though by T&T absolutely LFFing the hell out of the other AA games to this extent. Which other AA games got votes?

Don't have an ordered list after this, but the two games I really wanted to find room for but couldn't are Persona 3 and Trails in the Sky The 3rd.

If anything the game I don't get being so high is Nier Automata. I don't really have complaints and would say the story was fine/interesting, but I wouldn't say it was remarkable. In fact a number of the side missions had way better stories than the actual story itself. Maybe this was due to never actually having finished the game, and everyone says the final stuff is the best part, but at least I think I can justify a complaint if I've made it through 2 routes and don't care about any of the main characters and have no desire to continue.

Tales of the Abyss is a very love it or hate it thing, a lot of people can't stand it. A lot of those people didn't get very far in, though. Appreciation for the story depends on how much you're into the idea of flawed/intolerable characters growing throughout, especially in regards to the main character. I also think in terms of raw story it's easily the best the series has to offer.

Berseria is a much safer pick, not to mention definitely being better on the game front. The story is not actually PARTICULARLY all that special, but it's strength lies in the main party, which is arguable the best playable cast in the entire jRPG genre. Seriously, what an absolute unite of an RPG party.

Almost put FFX on the list, and I first played it... two years ago?

If it weren't for the story (and combat), FFX would be a much harder to enjoy game.

Insane sidequests, horrid minigames, hundreds of hours of level grinding to fight postgame monsters.

From the first topic:

1. How was the list decided?
I initially weighted the voting for each Top 10 list in a +10, +9...+2, +1 way, but later changed the weighting to be more like +10, +9, +8.5...+5, +4. This helped out games that were on multiple lists but necessarily high on peoples lists, and ended up feeling much more fair.

So it seems I was right about the top two (not that I ever posted my predictions...) but wrong about the one that eventually took off and won. It does make sense - that top 5 in general was probably about the most B8 top 5 possible, I'd venture.

I'm not terribly surprised DQV (and the series in general, for that matter) didn't even make the top 60, but I am pretty disappointed, especially that I was the only one who voted for it. DQXI and especially FRLG might be eye-raisers; both stories had similar appeal for me as OoT's did for certain other voters, and the former in particular had a fair few clever beats and twists on top of that. Also, stories in the relatively few games I have played don't tend to do too much for me anyways, with the main exception of my +10.

I'm still simmering on Celeste as I advance through the B-sides, but I know I'd bump it up to +6 at a minimum on a redo. Alongside that, some other games this list tells me I should really play/continue at some point soon are Super Paper Mario (one of my last cuts, because it's been around a decade since my playthrough), FFX (it's been sitting in my backlog for a while, for no good reason), and Trails (you know that thing about story generally not being what I look for in games? well, I'm not even halfway through FC at the moment and yet it's still on my list).

With all that said, this was certainly a fun project to participate in and follow along with regardless. Thank you for hosting it, KP! Also, here's hoping you or someone else hosts a Best Setting in Gaming project along these same lines soon.

Shibuya Scramble seems to have a lot of supporters here, though when I started my VN playing spree and got a ton of them at once, it's the only one I put down because I wasn't enjoying it. Will likely get back to it some day.

I didn't really consider putting it in my top 10, but I'd still recommend checking it out if you're looking for a new visual novel.

Leon 'won' the topic series. His #1 and #3 were FFX and AA3. His #2 was MGS3, and for a time that was also in the Top 3 of the final list.

Now that I'm not in Positive Writeup mode, MGS3's story is trash outside of the last 10% and I would have been salty if it won.

Outside of the Niers (and Life is Strange but that doesn't really count for the purposes of this comparison), I don't think a single Square game published after FFX got a single vote.

EDIT: Oh right, Shadowbringers.

It's a fun twist on visual novels because it uses live action people for its story scenes. It also has a huge number of hilarious bad endings.

Count me in as one of the people who experienced FF X later in life. I finished it like 2 years ago and it wasn't even the HD Remake version.

MGS3 is great the whole way through. The story of Big Boss's start to darkness and the wild ride of The Boss's character arc, as well as how they intersect, is such an emotional rollercoaster. I prefer games that really stir up my emotions over something that tries to blow my mind by just being crazy. It's why I prefer MGS3 to MGS2 and the original Nier to Automata, and why FFX is my favorite story.

I nearly voted for Mass Effect 3 because that's a super emotional ride for me, too, but if I was attempting to be objective, I couldn't ignore the ending. FFX and MGS3 absolutely nail their endings, and that makes a world of difference.

Kind of disappointed to see what got in and what didn't, honestly.

• Ocarina of Time may be super overrated, but the storytelling and presentation blew my mind. That may be the only really worthy game that got in.
• And as much as I love Majora's Mask, I used its slot pretty much as filler (well-thought-out filler, but still!).
• Actually, my +1, +2 and +3 were pretty much fillers, since it was kind of hard to think of really compelling and full-fledged stories as the list went on. I mean, Undertale had an awesome execution of the story, but it wasn't a ground-breaking story for me. Seeing it so high makes me worry about the quality standard for stories/storytelling in videogames...
• ...But then I remember Terranigma's story exists and I'm kind of relieved.
• Driver 2's story, characters and cinematics are awesome and ahead of their time. Highly recommended.
• Crystalis is the pinnacle of NES storytelling. Mind-blowing as well.
• I forgot about To the Moon, so it would've probably placed around +3.

Anyway, there's a review I've yet to post.
