I posted HBO's upload of last night's LWT with John Olivier and he ends the show with the last minute-and-a-half or so of that clip and I strongly recommended that everyone watch it and yes it is one of the most powerful things I've seen. My chest was tightening up watching it.

But yes, the full clip is 100% worth watching as well.

So Trump to win is at 45 cents on PredictIt. I would put some money on it, except that the way the market is these days, it seems like there's a lot of possible winning or losing on a much shorter time scale than 5 months.

In the last 2 and a half months the S&P 500 has gained about $9 trillion in value. That comes out to an average of about $30,000 for every single person (not household) in the country. And that's just 500 companies.

Republicans would never agree to defund the police. They know that when they're in power, the police would gladly be their soldiers.

ETA: Republicans instead of conservatives. Conservatives might not want to defund the police, but it wouldn't necessarily be for the same kind of self-serving, violent reasons as the GOP wouldn't want that.

I don't know what happens if Trump loses the election and both he and Biden claim legitimacy, but there's really nothing to be done in that case except support the election winner and it's up to the government to sort it out.

At this point I think it's more likely Trump rigs or cancels the election so his authority is never challenged, or maybe he does step down and does the "President in Exile" routine.

Trump could try, but he doesn't have the support to pull it off. A ton of ordinary people love him, but to keep power that way Trump would need overwhelming support from career government workers. Considering his military leaders are openly badmouthing him already, I think it's safe to say he won't have that. Unless you think Trump could get red states to secede and put him in charge of their new country, he's done if he loses in November.

Democrats control cities and therefore police at a local level. And there is currently a ton of resistance to sweeping reforms at the local level. This actually is bigger than party lines.

Republicans are into making deals. Democrats are into screwing up and then blaming others afterwards. The Democrats' single biggest accomplishment in their entire history is to force poor and lower middle class people to pay into a ponzi scheme (social security), while the rich don't have to pay into the ponzi scheme and can invest their income in something that actually generates a return, making them richer. A lot of poor people in America today would not be poor if they could access the money they've paid into social security.

And before you say that poor and middle class people might spend their social security money - spending money to buy things you need is a better use of it than losing it by paying into a ponzi scheme. And for people who choose to invest it, I bet they can beat a -100% return. It's hard to do worse than that.

The Republican Party should, IMO, make it an official part of their party platform that they will not negotiate with corporate Democrats. Negotiate with poor people and their advocates on the left directly. No negotiation with moderate Dems!

Sure but cities don't try to fight unions very hard and you have to ask why that is. And the answer is that at a broad level, Democrats support the police more than forcibly reforming them. There's not been a loud outcry about that until recently.

Democrats control cities and therefore police at a local level. And there is currently a ton of resistance to sweeping reforms at the local level. This actually is bigger than party lines.

What I mean is that this country, as a whole, is far more conservative than a lot of Democrats want to believe. We have the entire Republican party, who don't care about anyone but the super wealthy and go out of their way to harm and oppress the poor (usually brown people), and about 2/3 of the Democratic party, who are MORE liberal than the Republicans, but ultimately still need to appease a largely conservative country with more moderate solutions to problems, since progressive solutions, at the moment, frighten potential Democratic voters over to the Republicans.

Police reform is absolutely vital, but unfortunately, this country is resistant to change and people are stupid and easily manipulated by simplifying complex issues into sound bites. When you say "We want to defund the police", those of us who look into it and understand the actual meaning behind the phrase are okay with it...but if you're not going to go out of your way to study the issue, then it sounds like "let's get rid of all the police!" And again, unfortunately, suggesting "get rid of the police" scares white people who are NOT being victimized by the current, racist system. It's the same thing with a lot of progressive ideals, in that they're very good if you understand them, but it's not easy to paint them in a quick, positive light to the voter base. Like with M4A, Bernie tried his best to explain "you're going to pay less in premiums, so you're actually SAVING money", but all that people heard was "you're going to pay higher taxes".

My consistent argument is that, so long as the GOP exists, there is a right-wing, conservative alternative to the moderate wing of the Democratic Party that voters can flee to, and switch the power structure of the country every four to eight years. We need consistent wins for the Democratic Party, every year, which means the progressives hopping onboard, because moderate Democrats are still better for progressive ideals than Republicans. If this happens enough, then the GOP might actually have to move left, instead of learning that they can push into open racism with Trump and still succeed in all of their goals. This means that the center gets moved back to the ACTUAL center, and progressive ideals aren't viewed as extremist and radical pipe dreams, but rather a way to improve upon the current system. As a result, suddenly the progressive movement has a chance of actually breaking through in a conservative country.

That's because most white people don't have to worry about the police in the same way black people do. They rely on the police for protection, and can count on them. People only care when it affects them.
