Went through company policy and saw if we give a month notice they'll let us cash in 20 days for two paychecks when leaving.

Yes. In certain positions it's encouraged. Employees who handle sensitive data with the company are immediately let go, even when giving two weeks, in order to prevent any sort of data theft or sabotage. They're allowed to cash in all accrued vacation time and I think even sick and personal time.

I don't accrue vacation days. There's a flexible guideline that two weeks of fun time off, plus a week around December holidays. It's not tracked in any official way.

Sick days aren't a thing either. If I'm not well or have appointments, I just let my PI know and I take the day off. My yearly stipend is the same regardless of how much I'm off.

If I leave halfway through the year, and I havent used any vacation, then I get half my vacation time paid. Same with sick pay.

I left my job of 10+ years and they wouldn't let me cash in any time. I even tried to donate it to some co-workers who needed it and they wouldn't let me.

I got a ton for my unused vacation days when I left. I was so glad that I didn't sell them back for a smaller price when I had the chance...

They give you more if you sell them when you leave vs normal sellback periods?

At my job, they did. Lots of people werent able to use them because we had like no people unless they really had to. So, They decided to give us the option of selling the days back to them. That way, we wouldnt lose them. But you got a smaller percentage of the amount. Like if you sold 8 hours, you would get less than if you just used the 8 hours. They use to have that, and got rid of it. But decided to reimplement it... I was thinking about selling, but didnt. When I left, I got full pay for all the days I didnt use. And I rarely used any, so it was a lot!

At most of my jobs, that has been the case. At my current place, the company has a huge number of employees - and they don't pay. Actually, technically, everyone has infinite paid time off. This allows the company to skirt the law requiring payment. The average project schedule is so accelerated that it's hard to really abuse, unfortunately.

That's very bizarre. We can't do this with vacation time, but at my work we have a choice when it comes to overtime. We can get it paid at at 1.5x what we normally get paid, or we can use it for time off at a 1:1 ratio.

They actually prefer to pay it out rather than have us take time off because time off isn't billable. Even paying us 50% more if we want the cash is still profitable compared to taking time off.

If I leave voluntarily they'll mail a check of unused pto. However it would only be base pay, so I'm gonna use all those hours before I go.

We get paid for any unused personal and vacation time yearly at our hire date anniversary.

If you give notice , you get your vacation but not your personal hours.

My company does not. When a former coworker was leaving the company for grad school, he went on a two week vacation trip three weeks before leaving the company since they do not allow employees to cash out.

I think it was mostly for sick time. But I think you could do it with vacation time. But vacation time had a longer shelf life than sick time...

Ive seen people do this at a bunch of places. Especially in the military. They pay less if you sell it. So, people just take off since nobody wants to be there, anyway. They usually have out-processing. Though, one guy double-dipped. He put the leave request in. It was suppose to be approved, but something happened. Anyway, it somehow denied the request. But they couldnt reach him. In the end, he got all the time off. But because it didnt process the leave time, and he didnt put it in again, he got paid for the days, and use them at the same time...

I think I would definitely do that at jobs if I knew I was quitting soon, and would get money for those days. You could either enjoy your days off, look for another job (if you didnt have another one lined up, or work another job to collect some extra money...

Depends on the company. Some won't even pay it out when they fire you.
