Spending trillions on shit we don't use is the opposite of funding.

We could literally save so much fucking money by just not R&Ding shit we never use. We have spent literally trillions making fighter jets that no American pilots ever flew and to recoup the massive losses we sell them overseas and sometimes it winds up in the hands of our enemies
Seriously. Anytime you want to get mad, read about military R&D. Its graft, corruption, and waste all the way down. Congress often literally appropriates more weapons than the military wants.
Of course, thats just part of the problem with our military budget.

so i'll ask again, do you understand what deterrence means?

this is ignoring the fact that a relatively small amount of our military budget goes to things like that, so your argument is even dumber than it seems

I like high-budget defense contracting but only because I as an individual can make good money in it if I can hook up with a defense contractor. They have some sweet jobs.

I'm not sure why that person said that or who they are.

One of the council members on the Minneapolis City Council, of the city where George Floyd was killed and where people are calling to abolish the police.

You're not sure why he/she would say they would abolish the police when their constituents and black activists call to abolish the police?

Also, Black Visions Collective's founder Kandace Montgomery said:
We dont want no more police. Is that clear? she said. We dont want people with guns, toting them around in our community, shooting us down. Do you have an answer? It is a yes or a no.
After Frey replied that he does not support the full abolition of the police department, he was shouted away from the scene.
Go home, Jacob, go home, the crowd chanted, followed by Shame. Shame. Shame.

It seems like you're quoting an entirely different article now. In that first article, it wasn't clear who made the statement you referred to, they were simply called a speaker. I know why they said they want to abolish the police. Probably because they want to abolish the police. The dispute was about whether that means just abolishing the police and doing nothing else or whether that means fundamentally reorienting our responses to social disorder and social issues (hint: it's the second one). Yes, she doesn't want police, but that doesn't mean she wants no one to answer when she calls 911.

Whoever the speaker was in that previous article, they haven't done their homework because there's at least a few boilerplate answers to the question of who would answer. If it's a homeless person urinating on the steps, you can call a homeless outreach person who could connect that person directly to a job, a shelter, permanent housing, drug treatment, etc. If it's a person with mental illness yelling, you can call someone woh is actually trained for that. For traffic tickets, etc you don't need a cop with a gun for that either. You can go on and on with that and eventually you realize that the role of uniformed, armed cops can be so greatly reduced that it's functionally eliminated or that you can maintain only a select few with the privilege of responding with violence. You save money, reduce crime, and save lives, and live in a far less racially divided and brutal society. That's the argument, at least.

Probably because the long term is that there would be a replacement security force in cities anyway regardless and its a governmental headache.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/minneapolis-city-council-announces-intent-disband-police/

On Sunday afternoon, hundreds of people rallied at a Minneapolis park to call for more changes to the city's police department. Nine out of 13 Minneapolis City Council members stood up on the stage to announce their intent to disband the city's police department, CBS Minnesota reports.
The announcement comes after council president Lisa Bender and member Jeremiah Ellison tweeted last week that they plan to dismantle the police department.

The alternative offer had to do with taking the department money and putting it toward community initiatives that strengthen safety, CBS Minnesota points out. Concrete details about how to do the work of dismantling MPD were less defined, although council member Philippe Cunningham said the upcoming budget is a great place to start.
"We're not going to tomorrow all the sudden have nobody for you to call for help. There will be thoughtful and intentional work that's done, research engagement, learning that happens in a transition that will happen over time," Cunningham said.
Many people have asked, in this visionary future with no police, "Who do you call when there's no 911?" One of the speakers on Sunday said it would be family and neighbors.

So like in Africa when people get accused of a crime and they put them in a tire and light it on fire? Or where they pour acid on women for not looking at other men?

Complete and utter mob justice. Fucking idiots.

I would need to understand exactly what "defunding the police" even means before I make a decision on whether I'm for or against it.
It means spending money on preventative measures rather than reactionary measures, i. E. pulling the military budget from the police and instead giving it to social programs to house the homeless, find humane ways to get people off drugs, deescalate violence, etc. Basically if you're not for this you aren't a very good person, though I wouldn't expect most people here to be able to bother using the Google machine to know what it means.

Biden knows what it means though and he doesn't give a fuck. *shrug*

I don't fully understand how people think things will work if we eliminate the police.
Idk, I saw some lady proposing a stepped approach to shifting police responsibilities which is honestly something we need. But eliminating them altogether is a hard sell for sure.

Isn't de-funding the police a local issue? Like what is the actual congressional authority in this matter?
