https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/texas-reports-a-record-high-number-of-hospitalized-coronavirus-patients-after-state-reopened-early.html

Texas reported a record number of coronavirus hospitalizations Monday weeks after Gov. Greg Abbott took the lead among governors in easing social distancing measures to help bring jobs back.

There are currently 1,935 Covid-19 patients in hospitals across the state, topping the previous hospitalization record of 1,888 patients on May 5, according to new data from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Texas was among the first states to relax its statewide stay-at-home order, allowing it to expire April 30 and some businesses to resume operations May 1.

The coronavirus has infected more than 75,400 people in Texas, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The positivity rate for Covid-19 tests in Texas reached a low of 4.27% toward the end of May but has since jumped to 7.55%, according to the states health department.

While hospitalizations are increasing, there are more than 1,600 open intensive-care beds and more than 5,800 ventilators available for critically ill patients.

Some infectious disease experts say hospitalization numbers could be a better way to track a states reopening performance since its more difficult to skew than testing data, which fluctuates depending on how many tests are being run.

Looking at things like how many ICU admissions and deaths are probably some of the strongest and most reliable (data points) because they are the worst outcomes that could happen, said Dr. David Hardy, an adjunct professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who specializes in infectious diseases.

Texas opened hair salons on May 8 under certain restrictions, such as maintaining six feet of distance between beauty stations. Gyms and exercise facilities, nonessential manufacturing plants and office buildings could reopen with 25% capacity and other social-distancing guidelines on May 18.

The state later allowed bars to reopen at 25% capacity and restaurants at 50% capacity. Infectious disease and public health experts warn that indoor settings where people may not be wearing a face covering and the air circulates less could increase the risk of the virus spreading.

Coronavirus cases in the United States have been slowly ticking up since the Memorial Day holiday, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Hopkins. The coronavirus has now infected more than 1.95 million people in the U.S. and has killed at least 110,700.

1935 hospitalized doesn't mean 1935 in intensive care, so mentioning there's still 1600 ICU beds available makes me wonder what their utilization rate is.

Well testing has become more widely available.

Infections don't just occur in the span of one day.

Testing doesn't send people to the hospital, though. Hospitalizations means the number of people with symptoms severe enough to be admitted to the hospital for it.

Texas has been going up ever since they opened up. I mean made a topic about this weeks ago. They had 3 total days over 1000 new infections in April, they had nearly every day in May with 1000 new infections. Were those because of the protests that didn't happen yet? Hell it's even too soon to see what effect the protests will have on the totals. Trying to blame this on the protests instead of the incompetent governor ignoring every guideline including Trumps reasonable guidelines is just stupid. This started on May 1st and has gone up ever since, long before a BLM protests happened.

According to this, Texas is only doing about 49% of the amount of testing they should be doing. They are seeing large increases and they aren't even doing an adequate amount of testing.

Phase 2 of Texas' reopening started May 22nd, long before any protests. They've been on an upward trend of hospitalizations since May 26th.

The only risk here is if Texas is getting close to hitting the limit on hospital capacity, which I doubt they are, they are still way below what New York numbers were at the peak

The further we drag this pandemic on, the worse the economy will be, and the longer it will take to get back to normal. It's simple logic, but dipshits like our governor can't grasp it.

It's not necessarily hospital capacity but icu capacity. I wish they were saying how many of the hospitalizations were people in the icu but unfortunately they're not.

If only there were some measures that our national government could take to help mitigate the costs of being shut down and to help mitigate the risks of opening back up.

You know, like virtually every other 1st world country is doing.
