A professor at UCLA has been suspended and is currently under police protection after having his life threatened by the students. He asked by those in his class for leniency in marking the exams, due to the George Floyd protest; particularly for black students. But they were refused, the professor feeling it was fair for all students to be graded equally. He is now under investigation by the UCLA for discrimination.

death threats are ridiculous but he could have been kind and just delayed the exam until everyone could take it, if he didnt want to seem unfair.

Dont think you can delay the exam. Grades are due by a certain date. I would have said if a student feels they cannot take the test I would decide on a case by case basis and they would need to speak with me 1 on 1. I also would never teach a class where the finale is the whole grade like this professor

Any time there's any sort of national protesting you always get a couple of stories of students requesting things like this, or they want class credit for attending a rally, or they want to use their protesting as an independent study. It's always just people gaming the system and never a genuine request made out of a sincere need.

Did you know that many universities classify mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry as a liberal art?

It's worth pointing out for those who aren't going to actually read the article that this wasn't a black student requesting leniency from the professor due to hardships. This was a bunch of white students asking that the professor to grade black students differently in light of everything going on.

The story began when a group of students, who described themselves as 'non-black allies' of their black peers, wrote to Klein asking for him to effectively cancel the final exams for black students.

It's also worth pointing out that this was an online-only class and the professor had no idea what race anybody was.

The UCLA professor is actually suspended because he mocked the cause of some zealous student activists at a time when making comments like that are dangerous. That's the only significant thing in this whole news story. The request and him saying no are irrelevant.

Why does the value of a degree depend on careers or employment?

Fun fact: I went to a bar back home after graduating from a liberal arts school. Went out with my cousin and her bar-friends were ranting about liberal arts schools promoting the liberal agenda and how it's unfair to conservative-arts colleges. That was a fun night.....

Gonna have to side with the prof on this, what stops the people that DIDN'T protest from abusing it?

Only other way I can see it working is if they could provide proof they were there, but Cops kept stealing peoples phones and a lot of people hiding their faces for fear of being arrested later. Its tough, but one night off of protesting wasn't going to be the end of the movement.

well it's your time your putting in and with you living in america, a lot of money you're putting in tuition for said degree. wouldn't you want to get some monetary incentive for your investment.
