As a tip to others . . . if you can't get over the fear reaction a good medatitative practice my Grandmother taught me the first and only time I was stung was to pinch my pointer finger and thumb together really hard. Gives you something else to focus on. Now I just kinda say hello and don't react if they inspect me, or slowly wave my hand a bit non-threateningly. I have quickly but gently tossed them off of my shirt before though when one landed on me. They will let you know if they are on the offensive and protecting their nest. They will hover in formation and create a radius vibrating the air loudly. Just back away slowly in that scenario. Running and flailing trying to hit them translates to them as an act of aggression naturally . . . and that's never what you want, especially if the whole hive is present.
