Because Lee was a brilliant general? You can still respect certain aspects of someone even though you disagree with their beliefs. Like Hitler...a complete shit human being that hopefully rots in the lowest pits of Hell, but an absolutely brilliant politician.

So we should have Hitler statues and name towns and roads after him?

Sometimes certain actions forever stain your life's legacy. Like being the top general of a rogue state that broke away because rich dudes wanted to enslave black people.

It's crazy that the Confederacy to me is so celebrated. Like, they were actually traitors. They actually committed treason man wtf. That's literally the most unAmerican thing you could do. lol

You dont know why southern states would still celebrate soldiers who fought to defend their state and families? They were traitors to the Union. They were not traitors to the states they called home. If the federal government tried to conscript you to literally kill people in your own neighborhood and you said nope, Id rather go to prison or fight you instead, I seriously doubt you would consider yourself a traitor, even though you technically would be.

Attack the celebrations and memorials from the slavery position. Thats the one that is reasonable.

he rose to power because he knew how to manipulate the masses. He used that skill for evil but it is well known he was a master public speaker. He found a perfect excuse for all of germanys problems. And then he told the people only he could save them

Worth remembering that Robert E. Lee was himself a rich dude who enslaved black people.
Also he had a notable predilection for attacking and looting freedmen towns on his campaigns north.

A war that brought them death and ruin and (would have) benefited only the white aristocracy. It was a gross tragedy, yet only its architects ever seem to be honored. You do not see much commemoration of southern efforts to resist secession or the Confederacy, for example.

Hitler wouldn't have had success "using his power for good". He needed to take advantage of anti-semitism in order to actually achieve power. The idea that it's "smart" to use racial tensions is silly. It's not that other people don't do it because they're too dumb to figure it out.

That is an interesting point and now Im curious about those common folk Southerners who basically thought or better yet said fuck, no, lets not go to war. War sucks. Just do the right thing and free the slaves, please.

I kinda think that Hitler could have been a different kind of politician. if in a different timeline and if he was a different person, he could have been a great man. people HAVE risen to power through good causes.

I don't believe that using Jews was his only option. it's just the one he took cause he was evil. he DID have a very proven ability to speak to the masses. Imagine if Abraham Lincoln had wanted to blame all our problems on black people instead of doing what he did. that's basically Hitler.

it was always wrong to enslave other humans and make them toil for you. doesn't matter what century it happened. there were people throughout human history who have said that it is wrong. it's just those in power were always in favor of slavery.

Hindsight is 20/20. I just find it funny so many people are so sure they would have been above such ideals that were status quo of the day.

The director's cut (which I haven't seen) is almost 5. Still it's a shame we never got that sequel to Gettysburg. Even if the director is a Lost Causer and Trump supporter.

No, but I think it's telling that the British were offering abolition to colonial slaves that joined them.
