Garner's murder was indeed overlooked. At that time people were still focused on Michael Brown.

There were pretty sizable protests after Garner's death, or at least following the grand jury's decision not to indict.

Thank you for showing that Garner protests were few, relative to Floyd.

Yeah, I do wonder with all the previous police-killings of unarmed Black men, what was it about Floyd that really set people off.

20 to 30% of the country is out of a job and have been stuck at home for three straight months. I think years from now when people are doing a retrospective on everything that's happening, the impact that coronavirus has had on these protests will be a significant through line.

It's hard to go out and protest when you're working the closing shift and have to get up early the next morning.

Tamir Rice's murder was also very egregious. That got overlooked as well.

Everything has a breaking point. That's why i laugh when people say "just do it peacefully!". People have for years. they did it peacefully after each one and all they got was "All lives matter!", Pushback and the fuckin President turning their protest into something about the Troops. People were fed up, so when it happened again they just said fuck it. How many times does it need to happen for something to be done? Nothing got overlooked, people were just ok with attacking their protest in the past, and making excuses for those responsible for the tragedies.. This time they weren't going to let anyone attack it.

Was Garners death caught on film?

I feel like this was different because of how blatant it was. It was on film and in good quality. It didn't happen partially off screen. The image was good. There is sound. Also a massive crowd of witnesses and you can see and hear how the crowd begs them to stop and the cops defy their pleas for basic humanity

And that it wasn't fast. These cops can't claim they made a split second decision. This was slow and deliberate

The quarantine definitely had a huge impact on why this got so big. It was a perfect storm of people just feeling shitty about their lives and people having enough of this s***.

Also Floyd narrated his death in a way that Gardner didn't (not to say his death wasn't as ugly) but listening to a man say he can't breath, describing his pain, crying for his mother and ultimately watching him pass away in real time hits harder.

It's easily the pandemic. You have a situation where many people don't have jobs and you have a president who hasn't exactly done much to help keep those people without jobs happy.

On top of this the Garner video while bad, wasn't nearly as horrifying or egregious as the Floyd video.

yes it was caught on film, pantaleo grabbed him from behind in a chokehold and pulled him to the ground and another cop put his knee on his head and he went unconscious and he died a bit later.

The cause of his death (aka the chokehold) was definitely caught on film.

Seeing Ahmaud Arbery's video. Then learning of Breonna Taylor. Then seeing the George Floyd video made it so enough was enough.

Also the NYPD harassing and attacking Black people over social distancing (even when there were no violations) while leaving White people alone and even passing them masks in parks.

If I had to guess it's a mixture of Corona virus showing the incompetence of the administration, and then three senseless murders almost back to back in Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, two of which were caught on video.
