He clearly cares about our state. Otherwise, why would he consistently get reelected?

Well done.

And when they said no amount of lowering EPA Standards will not bring the mining back, reminds me of these Bob Dylan lines, from, North Country Blues.

"Then the shaft was soon shut, and more work was cut
And the fire in the air, it felt frozen
'Till a man come to speak, and he said in one week
That number eleven was closing

They complained in the East, they are paying too high
They say that your ore ain't worth digging
That it's much cheaper down in the South American towns
Where the miners work almost for nothing

So the mining gates locked, and the red iron rotted
And the room smelled heavy from drinking
Where the sad, silent song made the hour twice as long
As I waited for the sun to go sinking"

As someone who was raised in a small Georgia town, in a small Georgia county, that had similar opportunities in the area and had those opportunities shut down(a while before I was born but still), this is a story repeating itself across the country and its sad and depressing.

The reason I left and joined the Army was because there's no opportunity in the area anymore. Where I'm from turned into a glorified temporary retirement community. People sold the land they did have off to big companies or to 'city slickers' that came up to the mountains to live a peaceful life after they'd done made they money. My mom comes from what used to be two of, if not, the biggest families in the county and now everybody has moved away. Growing up, every time you'd go to a store you'd be running into somebody you were cousins with (2nd or 3rd+ removed) and everybody knew each other. Now its a bunch of strangers and people who don't care nothing about they fellow American because they're too busy being preoccupied with just trying to get by.

And there is nothing you can do to revive coal unless we find some non-energy use for it. As for the land itself, the only real way you can attract business is for somebody to take a loss and sell it for cheap to attract somebody like Amazon or some office based business to come set up shop for real cheap and try to generate some life that way. Beyond that I have no idea how you save Appalachia.

My guess is appeal to their sense of labor and craftsmanship. Easier said than done. There's only so much of a market for furniture.

Good post.
And thank you for the first-hand knowledge and experience.

How viable do you think foresty could be?
I mean, it's almost the same type of land as Upstate NY, and it is viable up here...
It is a renewable industry and when handled properly works very well.

On the road I grew up on, I've known at least one place had somebody come in and cut down the trees.

However, I'd say it isn't the most popular idea, at least now. Most people come to where I'm from for the view, the peace, the quiet. Start cutting down trees and from the mountains it'd look very patchwork. As for the rest of Appalachia? I'd be willing to wager that similar sentiments stand. Not to mention the potential disruptions you might have on the local wildlife. Hunting is part of the way of life for many people who have made permanent stakes.

So there's the potential for it but it'd have to be well-regulated and well-planned.

Indeed, indeed.

I would look at the example that The Adirondack Moutain Park sets forth.
It is a near-perfect patchwork of Foresty and Preservation.

I am a tree hugger.
But I also understand, respect, and appreciate the place a well balanced Foresty Industry plays.

Besides the pandemic, was there a legal reason to justify cutting 95% of polling places?

It should be illegal for one polling place to have to serve more than like 20k-30k people in an expected voting day. <_<

Also these disastrous results are the greatest, ultimate justification for mail-in voting.
